37" MTRs? No lockers I'm assuming? That's the only way him getting stuck makes sense... not that having 37" MTRs and no lockers makes any sense.

(he had to replace his front axel so put in a locker)

 

man, that's a stupid plan if i've ever heard of one. a majority of the time when folks get stuck, it's usually up hill. traction on the rear makes the most sense.

Also, for how much that thing weighs, having a locker on either axle in 4wd is fine.

Ever wonder why most intelligent AWD cars shift power to front wheels when going up hill? Or why FWD is better than RWD in snow?

The way AWD systems work in most modern cars is very conditional.

Specifically in the SH-AWD system from Honda, from a start, the system applies power front and rear to allow for better initial grip. In turns, they claim it can shift 100% of the power to the outside wheel to increase oversteer to counteract front wheel steering understeer. However, this say this but in actuality, the VLSD is basically locking the rear wheels together, since the inside wheel isn't getting much traction anyway, it doesn't do much to affect steering, but the outside rear wheel w/ traction is giving a significant advantage to the vehicle's turning capability. The SH System is full of computer controlled VLSDs, front, rear, center working to lock differentials as it sees fit.

For the original WRX before STI's DCCD system was introduced, power was actually split 50/50 evenly. With the STI, DCCD allowed power to be split 60/40 with a bias to the front for better steering. This, however, had an annoying tendency to wear out front tires more often. But handling ability was very good in level turns as it tended more towards understeer. The 50/50 non-DCCD models have crazy cornering ability but this terrible habit of ending up in oversteer after the apex during lift off.

FWD is better in snow conditionally as well. The reason FWD vehicles are popular and so prevalent in passenger vehicles is the fact that the system is less complicated to design and manufacture then RWD and especially AWD or Part time 4WD Systems. The reason FWD systems work better in snow or low traction situations is because most of the weight is in the front of the vehicle. However, once you're aimed up hill, due to gravity and acceleration, the rear end will squat and the location with the most traction will win, and that is always the rear wheels. The situation also gets more complicated when the passenger vehicle is full of people or cargo, at that point FWD won't help.

Approaching maximum frustration level... Budgeted some time to at least swap Kings today. Was hoping to get spindles and wheel bearings done too. After getting both kids to sleep and lugging all my jackstands, floorjack, tools and parts I discovered the tire shop gave me the wrong spline lug key . And of course they're closed and the 3 places open don't have em.

Anyone close to alameda with a 6 spline lug key? Shop gave me a 7... and yes I tried it that day. Feels snug in but just spins...
