Piecing Together An Aux Fuel Tank Setup

Having a hard time finding a 12 v solenoid valve that's gasoline safe.

That's what I'm thinking on the remote fill. Hook it to the bed rails. I'll probably get everything else working for now and do that later.

 

Does that pump have any literature about anti-siphoning? I know my old Transfer Flow tank had instructions to be careful about that. I guess some pumps can let fuel flow via gravity siphon after you shut it off in these types of applications. Just a thought to CYA. Nice build, I sure miss my 98 gallon tank in my Chevy 3500, had its own ECU that showed gallons, pump status, estimated range, & turned on/off automatically.

 

For those that don't know, a Isuzu Trooper fuel tank fits perfectly in the spot the spare tire is mounted in on our trucks. Has the fuel neck already in it and will work as a transfer tank to the main tank with the fuel pump in it.

 

That's a good setup. I saw a write up on it. I would bash it on a rock where I wheel though.

I popped the 4x4 selector out of the dash today. Don't use it anymore with the FJ case. I think I'll put the fuel gauge there. The opening is roughly 2 1/4". I think with a trim bezel on a 2 1/6" gauge I'll be good to go.

 

That would look very clean in that spot with a bezel to take up the gap.

look at a Asco Solenoid valve, they come in many sizes and voltage ranges, Dc and AC. I use them for diesel engines all the time, and the engines I use them on range from 20hp to 3000hp, so they are bullet proof. http://valvesandinstruments.com/solenoid.html?body_design=798

 

Thanks guys. The only thing I haven't ordered yet is the valve. I'm going to make a couple of calls tomorrow to figure out what exactly I need. I'll add that place to the list @gmann1972

 

Definilty do your research. You can use almost anything for diesel but gasoline is a whole different animal. Lower flash point, ethanol issues blah blah

Hmmm... I searched before I started my thread- didn't find this until today!

The auxiliary tank I have planned is under the bed and gravity feed into the oem tank- but will require a lot of the same things as a tank in the bed.

I'm thinking about having a bung welded into the fill pipe rather than T-ing into the hose.

 

Nice. I'm not the first by any means. I'm actually kinda copying @colinb17 's idea.

 

Be careful with the bung route. I can't confirm, but I thought I found somewhere, that the metal portion of the OEM fill pipe has a coating on the inside. If it does have a coating, cutting/drilling/welding will be bad news down the road. If it's just bare aluminum or stainless though, party on!

 

Ah... good to know. Maybe I'll just T into the hose then!

 

That would make it easier to reverse the mod down the road as well. I know here in CA it was easier to replace the T with a straight fitting when I went for Smog testing, as well as when I sold it Iremoved the tank & there was no remnant of the mod.
