If a crimmped connection corrodes it is because it was poorly done. I hydraulic crimper elimiates all air access to the joint. Without oxygen, no corrosion.

That's good stuff too, couldn't keep the Klein tools section at Home Depot stocked..... mostly because people always stole from it. That was always fun, running Customer Service and Returns so I could hear about how we were sold out of an item and then see the dude who blatantly stole it try to "return" it for store credit.

I fully agree, if done right crimped or soldered will work well but I don't expect someone to have a hydraulic crimper when working on things at home. If that is what he was intending to use then by all means go with crimped connections. I suppose on such large cable soldering it would be tough as well. With the tools and experience I have I would still choose soldering.

 

Really just a matter of the right tool for the job, larger cables really should be crimped. For small in cab stuff and small engine bay stuff, up to about 12 gauge I'll still solder. Past that it is time to start crimping as you can't really expect solder to hold up to the force of a stiff cable and it becomes harder to achieve a uniform heat to avoid cold solder joints. Hydro crimpers are about as cheap as good torch and acid core solder, or alternatively a good soldering iron and transformer setup, so why not have both in the arsenal. I have all three just in case

Agreed. For smaller stuff, definitely soldering over crushing with pliers and such.

The discussion today was about doing the 'big 3' wire upgrade without buying a pre-made kit. The minimum gauge wire for the big 3 upgrade should be 4AWG. With wire that big a hydraulic crimper like the $40 Amazon/eBay unit is the way to go.

I used the exact unit I posted a link to on my dual battery setup with 1/0 gauge. Was the perfect tool for the job.

 

I have no plans to go to Portland anytime soon. But if you come up I have good beer and a warm garage for modding.

 

If it wasn't for i5 traffic i would be much more inclined to do day trips.
