So i got this idea when i was looking at the whole list of cheap mods... this guy had installed some aftermarket fog lights on the bottom of his back bumper as auxillery back ups because the stock ones suck...as i looked at this i thought lights on the back would be good for anything .... working at night or just anything... but i dont like having stuff hanging off my truck because it just makes it look bad and cheap no offense to any one who has em... just my opinion..... but i was thinking you could take some after market foglights and install them the same way just on some sorta hinge so they could be folded back up underneath the truck to the backside of the bumper and have a latch or lock of some sort to hold them until you needed them... of course not for back up lights but just for some auxillery lights for if your working around the backside of the truck ...theres a flat lip on the bottom of the bumper that you could use to screw the hinge on so you wouldnt be able to see it at all.... im just wondering what you guys think of the idea.. and if anyone has anything like it already... also any better ideas for a way to hide the lights

yeah sounds good. the problem is they would have to be small enough to fit up under there. another idea is you could mount some behind the grill. i think that grillcraft makes one similar to that. someone on here actually did that mod if im not mistaken.

I'm sure you could run some wires to your truck bed compartments. Shove some small hi-intensity lights in there and then pull them out when you need to. You could attach then using black velcro strips or something like that. Or you could get a bed bar and mount them up there. The hide 'em in your bumper idea seems a little far fetched IMO.:)

I personally have not seen lights mounted the way you are talking about. But it sounds like a good idea, and try it out. If you like it or not, post some pic's
It is all about the way YOU want it to look, I had a 86 I mounted extra back-up lights on, but I found 2 area towards the back of the leaf's.
If I was going to add any mod or product, even if I seen someones pic's of it, I would sit back and take a LONG look before I decided or started anything.
People here have great idea's, mod's, products on their rides, some I like, some not for me. I always look for a way to make something better (to me).
If you look at the high-lift mounts here, great ideas, but for me it would not work, so I took all the advice, and tricks and made it work. I am very pleased with the outcome, and hopefully someone else (like I did) will use the pic's and do it themselves.
I say go for it!! and when you are finished post pic's during the day, and also at night when they are on. never know may have come up with something neat.

    Goodluck

I use to have a pair mounted right on the bottom of the bumper, Thay lasted mayb 5 mins on the trail but that were nice when that did last.

Low hanging lights is not a good idea if you're going offroad....

Here's something to look into - and perhaps someone can chime in.... When I owned my 96 tacoma, I removed the stock reverse bulb and put 50W bulbs in. They added a little bit of brihtness over the stock bulbs, was easy and cheap. However - I don't know if this can be done on the newer trucks.

I know other folks (who have body lifts) - put lights in the gap between the tailgate and bumper - again, older gen trucks.

Do you have the tow package? Or any other 7-pin harness? Just get a lightbuster that plugs in there. It has a 50w fog light bulb and it won't be "ugly" or there when you don't need it. Just plug in when you want light for working, or backing up. Just make sure you remove it so it doesn't fall out or get stolen.

Me, I don't want to fuck around reaching up under the bumper in the dark. So that's why I did that. But then, I'm not the first either. Most guys with plows on their trucks do the same thing.

Eventually I'll tie in a switch so I can flip them on whenever I want work lights, but not until I get a second battery.

Something else to think about: almost all fog light mounts rust and seize up. So your hinge idea might not last long.

the thing that I don't like about most of the ones that I see is that they look like fog lights. If you got some that were clear, thin and long, and were able to mount up high on the bumper, then that would be good. That gap under the bumper and above the light is what makes it look rigged to me.

Or a 110v CF drop light if you have the bed outlet. They draw around 7W IIRC so you can run something like 14 of them if you wanted. And they can really light up an area.

I'd be interested to know if it can be done on the 2nd gens....I haven't had much time here lately or else I'd dive in and research it myself. Just depends - as I might find the time.

I think something similar can be done, but it requires cutting the bulb to fit.... I'll have to see if I can find it again. I'm sure it's posted over on TN somewhere.

    Edit:

It's part of the first post here: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t93076.html

I'll try to copy/paste it into the cheap/free thread at some point. Pb may have even posted it here someplace.

so instead of mounting the lights on a hinge where you have to get out and bend down and unlatch them and all that ... me and my boss thought of a way to make them come down remotely... i woulda never thought of it and couldnt make it happen with out him because hes a genius when it comes to car and wiring and electronics... but i'm going to call around and find a car at the salvage yard that has hide away head lights... the ones that flip up and down.... and get the motors out of them .... then attach them to the fog lights that i found that are already made onto a hinge... then mount the whole thing on the back of the bumper where you cant see it so that when i flip the switch they swing up or down and have them wired up to both a toggle switch for whenever i want and also my back up lights ..... i know sounds "far fetched" but i'm gonna try it and see how it goes... hell might be a complete waste but might be pretty dam cool to have hide away back up lights lol...and for those who say they dont last long on the trail.... my truck doesnt leave the pavement..ever...i am a clean freak... and i am just bored to death with the truck and am wanting to do something not many people have

This seems like a better idea to me. Out of the way and gives you a spot to mount a CB antenna as well as a hi lift.

Too bad he just admitted he never leaves the pavement. :( He'd never need a CB or Hi-Lift (maybe not even know what they are or why he would "need" them. :D )

Sounds a little over engineered, but I'm curious how it'll turn out. :D

make sure those things have limit switches built in. If they don't, then you will end up burning up the motor.
