Overall, seems like a sensible plan.
I'd avoid the Duratracs. They have nice grip (although I personally think their sidewalls are shit), but they are a softer compound tire and may not hold up well to a lot of highway miles. My 2nd gen with a 2.5 lift easily fit 285/75-16's with little to no rub. I was on aftermarket wheels which pushed the tires out a little bit, though.

And yet every EMS service in the mountains runs DuraTracs, God I so hate this argument anymore.

No no, if he coats his tires with Mobile 1 then any tire size will work well!

In all seriousness I'd stick with a tire that has a good tread pattern and keep it at the stock 31 or 32" size since you're doing a lot of highway and then spend cash to get beefy armor/sliders and suspension upgrades. Alternatively there are a ton of cheap rims out there for sale; you could get a second set and put the giant offroading wheels on that set of rims.

Does anyone in northern ColoradoI have the ecgs bearing puller tool? I've got bad vibes that I believe is the roller bearing gone bad and would love to pay someone $20 to let me use their tool vs spend $60 on some time tool.

Yes it's true, no it's not necessary. With a long extension and a wobble I was able to change the left side plugs after loosening or removing just a few things on that left side. Right side is easy. I put iridium plugs in with some anti-seize because it's just annoying enough to change the left side plugs that I don't want to do it every 30k miles. But that's just me.

Oh and DONT overtorque them. Did that once on a motorcycle plug and that was a very bad day.

I've seen the sidewall on a Duratrac rip open like a prom dress.

Duratrac's are very popular with the USFS and the EMS, etc.... They actually do have a reputation for a decent sidewall, very popular in Southern Colorado with the abundance of shale rock.
But I've still seen one shred, in a parking lot no less. I'd say they are on par with BFG's to be honest.

I was on the duracrap bandwagon... thought I made the right decision because a lot of the county vehicles up here in winter park run them. Got 40k miles out of them before Moab decided to show me how crappy the sidewalls really were. Went with st maxx this time and absolutely love them. Look at picture and you decide for yourself.

And expensive, "top of the line" built axles/engines have blown wide open when not being pushed... I've seen vehicles roll over in parking lots being driven at normal parking lot speeds. Intelligence, or lack thereof has a lot to do with end results.

I tore the sidewall of my duratrac... Not certain if it was hitting the very large rock at 20mph and the tire being the only thing bringing the truck to a complete stop, or driving on it after it blew the bead a little ways down the trail to fix it at the camp spot.

Not saying they are a super tire... Just that they probably aren't 100% garbage.

Even @kashtyaatsi has a duratrac as a spare, so he must trust it. :bananadance:

I've seen plenty of people who "wheel" by just smashing into stuff instead of finding the correct line and wheel placement. No tire will put up with that forever. :p

Including dumb decisions to drift on ice into a boulder... But I'm not blaming a tire for something it shouldn't have done. I'm more than pleased that it was the only casualty. :militarypress:
