I changed the fuel pump to a Walbro 255. Maybe it's not needed. I don't have any evidence to prove one way or another. The sock on the stock pump was pretty nasty and clogged up though, so at least there is one benefit.

GOTCHA! Great information! Thank you guys! @oliver1539, I'll be installing it hopefully within the coming month. Work has got me all tied up.

What difference would the new higher volume pump do, if the fuel pressure don't drop while full boost/rpms?

Would I need one if I'm planning to install 2.85" pulley and headers? I have though that the stock pump would be fine.

The facts and a graph were posted long ago and the thread got nuked. That person who offered up the info is most likely watching this thread. If they choose to voice anything about it, so be it... if not, ill respect that.
I will not get into it by choice, and because i didnt get a chance to save the info before nuke.

I will say, i suggest swapping the pump out tho.
At the least it makes fuel filter accessible

It seems hit/miss on whether people need the higher output fuel pump when you make additional mods. There's probably a wide variability in actual fuel pump output from truck to truck.

It is all about duty cycle. Have an aged/clogged filter, that also puts a higher demand on the pump.

Plain and simple here. 4Runners have a larger pump than Tacomas, both having 1GR's. They might have a higher liter per hour output.

FJ's might have the same pump as the 4Runner.

Assuming that the FJ has the same pump as the 4Runner, and that the larger pump equates to a higher flow volume, then we can theoretically say that the 4Runner/FJ fuel pumps can handle more engine hp than the Tacoma. Which means it'd take more hp to reach the max duty cycle of their fuel pumps.

I only bring that up because the FJ members in here.

Of recent, search through the TW forum, and you'll find many people complaining about pinging. Some have had reflashes done to their ecu's, and it helped a bit. Others have replaced their fuel pumps and never had a problem again. Some have done a ramp test and found that the OEM fuel pump fails the test, and is the reason the engine is pinging.

If an OEM pump cannot handle the fuel requirements of a stock vehicle, then it certainly cannot for a boosted vehicle demanding more of it.

Who cares though? $150 pump to save you from destroying your engine? It works, fine." "Never had a problem." To those, I ask, do you have the ability to datalog your fuel pressure, under load?

Next, I ask, what is the Tacoma's fuel pump's liter per hour output? Being smaller than even a simple Walbro 255Lph (not to mention many of the others on the market) how can you safely say it can handle the increased flow requirements (HP) when you don't know its LPH output?

Not to mention age, which equates to worn brushes, and hours of use, as well as the potential for a highly contaminated and clogged filter.

Post up an LPH of the stock pumps, then we can accurately say what its safe capable HP is. Engine HP.

Toyota privies FJ's and 4Runners more than Tacomas.

Don't know about fj/4Runner pump being different/bigger. As said after replacing my fj pump truck does not go lean.. just adding more fuel to the fire haha also as another member posted an new fuel pump is only 150 from urd so it's the cheapest thing you can do to take something out of the problem equation either now or later down the road.

You're absolutely right on getting a fuel pump.

@inwood customs I wasn't arguing the need for a pump by any means seeing as how I've replaced mine and I'm definitely an advocate for replacing them. I was merely disagreeing with the statement that you would see gains with the pump replacement. You keep referencing an unknown member with supposed graphs indicating what you are saying, and as i said, Id love to see those and gain some knowledge. But from my personal experience, The only thing that changed for me was I lost the flat spot in my power band which I'm 99% sure was my fuel pump maxing out. Did not notice a "faster take off" or "better acceleration " from it.

    Never stated hp gains iirc.
There was a lull from cruise to wot, thats what i thought i said. Taking out the lull TIME made for FASTER response/pickup. Possible fuel delivery issue

The info that was posted from that other member showed fuel pressure drop off at high demand iirc.
    Not hp

I dont remmeber saying anything about hp. If i did, please show me, and I'll happily edit that. I will NEVER hopefully slip into throwing out hp numbers without a dyno.
I am not a butt dyno fan.

I dont know if i mistyped, if your seeing what you want to see, or if somehow my wording is coming out wrong.

Post 4121 i made the point i wasnt referring to hp

Had yours caused a lean out condition, Volcom, a bit extreme but still, then it would have been more of an obvious improvement. Being that your components were in a relatively good state, a noticeable difference was likely nill, as you mentioned.

That graph and thread are gone. Physically deleted or blocked from member view, I do not know. The poster was warned about being banned because it would add to the fire, of the thread which I know you remember. People asked for pertinent data to quell the debate. Took a few months, with all parties involved, to make it happen. Made it happen. Unbiased, pure scientic data from a lab. Mods tore the thread down, almost immediately.

The resource which they insulted....they have no idea what they lost. They were just wrapped up in all of the name calling in that thread, to see the value in they had.

Well shit! I threw my first code yesterday coming down the mountain. Made it almost three months since my install. Bank one and two, too lean. I don't remember code numbers. I installed a wideband AFR gauge a couple of weeks ago and it never leans out. Except when coasting down hill. It goes off the chart. I'm hoping the code came as a result of higher elevation and lots of coasting down hill. I had my neighbor clear the codes and I'll keep an eye on it.

Disconnect the battery for a few minutes, or have a OBDII tool. Such as a Scangauge II, or Ultragauge.
