Dual battery setup

I was only showing is it the 500 amp u were talking about. The use of the quick disconnect rated at 500amp? I'm looking for some right now.

 

If you use a secondary battery ALWAYS hook the winch to this. ALWAYS run a battery isolator.

Now lots of people do it different but stop and look at why. An isolator keeps your starting battery and winching battery isolated. So you drain the winch battery and no problem you can still start and therefore charge both batteries back up. By keeping the starting battery separate with the isolator your heaviest load (the winch) doesn't kill everything leaving you more stranded than you already are.

Usually you go with a deep cycle battery as your secondary i.e. Optima blue top or a yellow top which is good for starting or winching.

The connector idea is great IF you only use your winch on a receiver hitch. But if it is permanently mounted the wiring should be permanent as well. There is nothing worse than going to hook it up and there is corrosion and you get a bad connection. I had a set of these connectors on my old truck for battery cables. Worked great for a few years and then the corrosion was so bad I had to replace them.

 

Right. My Blue-SEA ML-ACR also has a force option, although it's off a switch in the interior, and I think the truck needs to be running to use it (not sure).

Force-connecting the two batteries could be the answer, but again, will depend on the situation and what risks you're willing to take.

Let's say you're in the river, with the truck off. Connecting the two and winching could result in both getting drained, or could result in saving your ass and leaving enough juice to start the truck when out of the river. Winching purely off the aux will likely fully drain it; if you're not out of the river at that point, then you could re-connect the winch to the main and continue winching. You could again drain it and still be stuck in the water, or you could get out and still have juice left.

I'd probably want to do the latter option - use & drain the aux battery, see how far that gets me, and make a somewhat educated guess on whether or not I want to risk winching off the main. Winching off both at the same time doesn't give you that safety net of only draining your aux - you're risking draining both.

Note that I don't have the background to know whether there are any efficiency differences in winching off one battery vs two in parallel, though. That's something also worth considering.

 

The solenoid rating is an indicator, but not really the spec. This document has more accurate specs for Smittybilt winches. Again, keep in mind the spike usage vs. rated usage.

All in all, if the winch comes with a 500amp solenoid, you're safe to use connectors rated for 500amps.

 

Yeah, there's certainly some logic to that.

To really cover all bases:
- deep cycle aux battery
- properly-rated quick-disconnects setup on both batteries
- dual-battery system that allows forced connect and forced disconnect of the two batteries
- keep the truck running whenever possible during winching, and for a bit after

 

More amp hour and current available in parallel. Most winches are series wound DC motors they are almost a complete magnetic short under load. The inrush current is double is run current usually.

Best to keep a noco with you if you're going on solo trips. Mines always under the back seat.

I would hope to never be in the situation where I need to winch with the engine off. Will kill your battery.

Thing is though shouldn't you be running same batteries with dual set up?
I know you're not but I hear many articles say you should have both AGM or both lead acid. Have any problems yet? I'd rather not buy two new batteries at the same time

 

I've read the same thing. No problems on this end so far, but use has been very light/minimal. Heading out for a month this coming Sunday, so I'll let you know when I come back .

noco gb40 from crappy tire on sale for $100 few months ago. No problems boosting my 1.9L TDI and diesels suck a lot to boost. Says it's rated up to a 6L gas engine.
One of the guys I used to tag along with for camping and hunting uses the same one on his 2nd Gen taco. No issues. Highly recommend it brother. And it's got a good light that faces where you're working unlike the gb70.

And works great for charging phones while camping
