Just making 20 MPG for 2wd - 4 cyclinder automatic. Is anybody else doing better? Would really appreciate some input. Bought the truck when gas was 4.00/gallon and they crushed my 3.4 - 99 access cab that I should of kept. Started out with 24 miles a gallon and 20000 miles later its barely 20 MPG! I could be driving a V6!

I get about 20 around town, mostly short trips, winter gas.

    I clunkered a 96 Explorer V8 that only got 14, though.

Thanks members for the info. I was hoping it would be a little higher. Guess I have to slow down on the the highway. Maybe stop using cruise control? Their adding ethanol everywhere here and I read it doesn't have the same mpg as gas. Maybe I'll take the rear tailgate off - heavy sucker!

I averaged over 28mpg once (combined about equal city and freeway miles) on a whole tank. I also drove like I was driving Miss Daisy around that tank, kept RPMs below or not far over 2000 and drove the speed limit or under (pretty much just cruised it everywhere). Just wanted to see what the best I could get was. Regularly I get about 22 - 24mpgs. ('08 2.7L 4spd auto access cab)

I've got 4x4, lift, and bigger tires. Still haven't gotten under 20mpg on pavement. Usually about 21mpg.

Have you tried mobile 1 synthetic oil?

Have you replaced your air filter lately?

    Secondary Air filter removal?

    K&N or other performance filter?

I guess I could mention that I have a K&N 63 series intake and run Royal Purple oil and filter. I just got some bigger tires(235/75r15) and a Dynomax muffler, so we'll see what happens to my mpgs when I'm done with my current tank, so far not looking too bad.

Well, that's your problem. You installed a hot air intake, lol.

Actually Im not the one with the mpg problem and the 63 series (plastic) is more of a cold air intake than the 73 series (metal). The metal intakes absorb heat from the engine a lot more than the plastic intakes, this heating the air going into the engine. I also ran a cool air duct from the front bumper (where the fog light would be if I had them) to the filter. Removed the air box in the fender as well.

They both put air from inside the engine compartment, while the stock air box pulls in outside air from the wheel well area.

I have an 08, extra cab, base, 4 cyl, auto. Before I turned it into a work truck, I believe I was doing about 24 to 26 mpg, mostly city driving. Oh, and by the way, that is with a topper in the back. Now, I have a 28 foot latter on top (wind resistance), and a bunch of tools in the back, including 160 lbs of concrete. I consistently average 19-20 mpg. I am using 5W-20 Mobil 1 synthetic. I live in North FL.

What weight oil are you using?

I use 20 as my "count on" mileage running city and 75-80 on the interstate and have seen as high as 25 with my 5 lug Acess Cab auto.
