Strange noise Please Help!

2006 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport with 74,000 miles on it. I bought it 2 years ago when it had 58,000 mileage from a dealership. The only thing I've done to it since I've had it is oil change every 3,000 miles and that is it.

The Noise - when accelerating from stop, or while moving, when RPM hits 2k it makes a whirring type noise from underneath. It's only at the 2K spot, once i go past that it stops, but if I manage to keep it at 2K RPM it will continue to make the noise. I did some tests. While in park and engine revved to 2k RPM NO NOISE. When I put in Drive, and push break pedal and bring RPM to 2K I can hear the noise again. Is there any other tests recommended to help narrow this issue? I've scoured the web with no luck. I hope somebody can point me in the right direction. I just started a new job and I have two young boys so money is tight and I'll have to attempt to fix this on my own.

Well if it doesn't make the noise at idle you can likely say its not related to the engine. (unless it only did it under load for some reason). I'd inspect your cv shafts... sounds like its something related to the axles or maybe a wheel hub bearing or some other driveline bearing. Can you be more specific as to where the noise is coming from? Front, rear? Driver or passenger side?

Edit I just re-read your post, you said it does it when you have the brakes applied and go to 2k... hmmm, well that kind of erases everything I said above x_x

Well in that case the only thing really moving at that point would be the transmission right?

 

Does it get louder at highway speeds?

 

Have you crawled under to see if something is stuck? Like a tree branch...

 

Have you checked the center support carrier bearing for the drive shaft?

 

Does it do it in reverse with your foot on the brake(while revving to 2k)? It kinda sounds like bearing whine(if that's a thing?) I know I've definitely had bearings with wear on them(not specific to a tacoma, just bearings in general) start to make noise as they wear. It also kinda sounds like an anomaly that I probably wouldn't worry about it. Just my two cents: My policy when it comes to strange and intermittent noises is that it will either get better, worse, or stay the same. I almost lost sleep when I first bought my '08 because I was convinced my valve train was doomed. 85K miles later, the racket is still there; not worse, not better. No use losing sleep over some deeply buried issue unless it's something you really just can't live with. Again, just my two cents. You also might search for some of the transmission threads and maybe DM one of the forums contributors who is very savvy in that dept.

 

I'm getting the same thing, I always here that whirring noise, almost like when you stand near a bright outdoor light, i've searched and i think it's pretty normal from what i've read. Could be something going bad, my power steering pump has since spewed fluid all over the engine bay and drips down on a regular basis. i'll be switching it soon.

 

Check your heat shields they tend to rot around the bolts. They can cause all kinds of weird noises.

Like eccracer mentioned above, this guy changed his carrier bearing for his rear shaft and it helped his noise.

 

I had the same noise, went under my truck and heat shield above drivers side catalytic converter, weld joint had broken off and causing the erratic noise, secured with self tapper ( not into cat . )
