Fender plastic pitting

Just had my truck washed and noticed the fender plastic is pitting. There is some pitting on the paint above the fenders as well. I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how this is happening. Picture is from right rear leading side of the fender trim, problem is on both sides equally as bad. Anybody have a similar issue? Truck has been to snow twice and off road a few times, nothing crazy, standard fire roads some small puddles etc.

 

That is strange, almost looks standblasted, wonder if mud flaps would make any difference.

 

It feels sandblasted, at first glance thought car wash did a shitty job when I went to rub it off i realized it was pitted.

 

LOL, it's normal. It gets worse with more aggressive threaded tires too as they'll chuck larger pebbles. Mud flaps help and keeps the stones from hitting others' windshields.

I drove through some volcanic basalt for about 40 miles through angeles crest highway one night before the road closure and my plastics look just like that with peppered paint chips even with mud flaps..... it still happens, but minimizes it.

 

Imagine if your flares were color matched and how pissed you'd be. One of the reasons I prefer the black textured plastic.

Get over it, it's an offroad truck and they tend to show scars when offroading.

 

Looks better to me actually, I wouldn't mind at all.

Also the flares are impossible to keep looking nice unless your truck lives in the garage it's whole life only to hop a curb at Walmart once in a while. The second a bush on the trail even looks at them, they are done for. You're better off not worrying and if you ever want to "restore" it someday down the line, they are easily replaceable and not too expensive.

 

Hey OP, I heard this stuff works. Someone posted this on here before. It has dye properties in it, so you can mask some of those lighter colored pit marks if applied. Do some research on it.

All these issues with the new Tacoma, I'm worried to take my taco off the sidewalks.

Agreed! Works great for UV protection, not for pitting.

 

Yep, keeps them from fading, not from scratches or pits.

 

when it gets bad you can always plastidip it black.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I am super happy with the truck so far. I was just a little surprised of the location, I couldn't visualize how it was reaching the rear like that. I have the stock mud flaps. The area where it is hitting would have to come from the front wheels but I cant imagine how it is getting so far back without hitting other parts of the truck first???

 

Is this stuff for regular use or is it a one time thing?

 

I have the same problem on my truck... Got this thing two weeks ago, and after one dessert trip my back fenders look worse than yours... I also put on 33 inch bfg's and I don't have mud flaps. Kind've a bummer but I guess it is what it is. Can you keep me posted on if anything works for you? I'm going to try the solution finish from Amazon - will let you know!

 

Running boards and mud flaps will solve that issue..!!

 

Well I guess I feel a little better its not just me...... The product mentioned above looks like it is to restore faded trim, it appears the plastic is actually being damaged/pitted from rocks being thrown. I might try removing the fenders and as mentioned above try to spray with plasti-dip. Im my experience dip is pretty thick and offers some protection. it is also relatively easy to remove and go back to stock. Just gotta see how the color and finish looks. There is a good chance the match will be good enough.
