So, I can't figure out what to call these plugs which appear on both sides of the upper intake.

I am cleaning the intake off the truck, and TB cleaner pours out of these plugs, is this normal? can I replace them?

:annoyed:I've been searching for quite a while.....

core plug / expansion plug for the casting? otherwise if coolant runs through there then freeze plug. they shouldn't leak though, are they corroded? i would think they should be replaceable maybe call up a dealership for a part #?

i dont know jack about 4cyls so i dont know for sure

Looks like a freeze plug. I think coolant circulates through that part of intake plus the throttle body to help it warm up quicker when cold. It shouldn't leak anything out of there while you have the intake off or else it will leak coolant when installed. The freeze plug should be replaceable.

Just verified that part# with my local dealer.
10$ each from them :frusty: But, instant gratification I guess.
do we use sealant on these? dealer had no idea.

    thanks a bunch!

looks like coolant does flow through it, notice the inlet on the back side. looks just like the one that's under my V6 TB

So, I didn't notice them leaking until I pooled some TB/intake cleaner over one of them, and I have no evidence of coolant leaking from them before I pulled it.
I should also say the dealer told me "they are just called plugs."
And why are they there? Manufacturing?

The TB cleaner may have dissolved some type of sealant which which they were installed? Such plugs are used to prevent castings (like engine blocks) from cracking should the coolant freeze--i.e. "freeze plugs". Also they are used when internal machining of a part requires an access port...

I would suspect you had a vacuum leak there prior to finding this out. It will probably run a lot better now.

    which locktite are you thinkin?
are you sayin I could seal the factory ones in without replacing them?

    also, pro-tip:
if anyone values the "16 valve" badge, don't soak it in TB cleaner :sadviolin:

If you are spraying TB cleaner into the plenum and the fluid is coming through the plug, it is probably just a welch plug (casting hole). I'd assume the plenum heater is just a U shaped pipe or coil that was cast in place. If this is the case, you can either remove it and take it up to your local NAPA to get a new one by size (I got a box of 10 for $3 when I needed one for my big block), or clean around the edge of the plug well then use Permatex high temp RTV to seal it.
If it is an expansion (freeze) plug for a wet galley and you are getting TB cleaner coming out after spraying into the plenum, you have other problems.

Edit: the above is based on a previous post saying that section is for coolant o warm the plenum. I do not know if that is the case. If it is not, and that pipe is actually a vacuum line, then you can clean and seal it or replace.
