Remember that your average truck/SUV purchaser in 'Murica stays on road. Thus a translation of the trim names is in order:

TRD Sport = smooth road trim
TRD OR = rough/dirt road trim

For 90% of people out there, having an off-road sticker on the truck just makes them feel badass on the way to the mall.

Thus, when purchasing a TRD Sport, it's worth asking: "Are the roads where I live and work smooth, or are they riddled with bumps, holes, and ruts?" Now you're speaking the same language as the marketers who developed the trim name.

Personally, I really enjoy the fact that my TRD Sport can firmly hold a corner at speed on the highway. But that's a smooth road...

Disclaimer: yes I know that this forum is full of enthusiasts who actually off-road, tow, haul, etc. You're all special.

I love the TRD Sport ride. Here in NH we have plenty of frost heaves and I have no complaints nor does the wife. This coming from a CRV and a Subie outback, which is WAY to soft for my liking. Stinks to have a new ~35g truck you do not like.

    Cheers,

I have a 2016 Limited DCSB I use as my daily driver for the last year. I find the ride jittery, non-compliant in the first 2 inches of travel. This has not changed or is perhaps getting worse since new, in part because I used to have the tires at 29psi (according to the door decal) and now they are 35psi. My son has an OR which has the Bilstein 4600s and it is more compliant where mine is jittery, but this could be in part due to different wheels and tires. I have been considering buying takeoffs from the forums to improve the ride, but are the front springs and rear leaf springs different between the Limited and the OR?
Also, should I get the 4600s or go to the 5100s like SurfratTX did? I don't have any plans for any serious offroading, I just want to have a more compliant onroad ride.

    ASdvice?

Which tires and load rating did he put on his truck? This alone can contribute to a rougher or smoother ride.

I spent 5-months in a 2016 SR5 and didn't have anything to complain about except the AT. So I swapped it out for a Sport with a 6MT a few weeks ago and suddenly I realized how much body-roll I was getting in the SR5. Now having had the Sport for a few weeks I feel strongly that it's an improvement for how and where I drive. So if the OR softness is what you want it just realize that it will come at an expense of handling - everything is a trade-off...

Well I have the OR with the Bilsteins all around, stock coils and leaf. Wouldnt say they are soft, would say they dampen road etc for much better improved handling, riding as in smooth. As far as handling even better over stock since it dampens, no bouncing or after jitters you get with stiff suspension and as for cornering etc.....I always drive fast and don't notice any kind of softness handling turns like as in lean.
For reference I have Nitto's G2's the 6ply side wall version, per Nitto's spec at 48 psi.
As I mentioned before my other car is a Honda Crosstour.....great handling, lower CG helps of course. My OR DBLCSB drives better than the Crosstour as far as dampening the road and for normal cornering can't tell a difference. I didn't buy a truck for its 'cornering'......or because I wanted stiff suspension. Stiff suspension is annoying at best.
Ever been on sand where other people have driven and it causes like ripples a few inches high in the tire ruts in the sand that causes like major wheel hopping/vibration? Typically where I get that is driving from North Padre Island for 4 hrs of 4wheeling down to Mansfield Cut for surfing and fishing, camping. Been experiencing that with multiple 4x4 vehicles for years, Isuzu Trooper, older Tacoma....limits you to like going 10-15mph and not getting your teeth completely rattled.
My 2016 Tacoma OR goes over that like nothing. Can easily go 40-45 mph. Cuts driving time from 4-5 hours to less than 3 hours. I was impressed!
Like anything depends on what kind of ride you want.
My personal opinion....Tacoma OR driveability over the other versions of the Tacoma.....is superior....and this is after test driving what I was originally going to buy a Tacoma Limited. Drove a Sport too.
Again not out to knock other people's love for their Taco's....

On a side note years ago I rode in a friend's new Corvette.
It was like riding in a frikin covered wagon with steel lined wood wheels and leaf springs....which was the first thing that came to mind. You felt every little micro nick in the road..
I told him it rode like caca...
He was like yeah I got the stiffer suspension so it would handle better...
    I think I chipped a tooth.....

I think you're being a little overdramatic, new model should have been test driven. You have no one to blame but yourself for assuming a brand new truck will ride the same as a 2011 or 2014 which makes no sense to me. Now take pops to the dealer and drive an OR if the ride is an improvement as numerous people have said look for a OR take off set with low miles.

I live with the hard-truth that my truck is a paved-road commuter vehicle. I also live in a state where there is absolutely no place to legally wheel it. So given how I use the truck the added body-roll of the off-road is less desirable to me.

However, I console myself with the fact that this is my preferred off-road toy:

    Different sway bars

Or go a step above and get the Bilstein 5100s, like surfratTX did, which affords an even better ride (he actually has a set of takeoffs he's selling, so he's "been there, done that"). True, they are more expensive (about $200 more initial expense) than a takeoff set, but how many times are you going to do that? And installation is the same for both.

Did you ever have a chance to drive that same sand with the stock Bilsteins? How do they compare with the 4600s?

Yeah mine is a pavement pusher....get off-road probably less than 1,000 miles a year, or 5% of the time.
    Nice bike! Really beautiful forest!

I did with my stock OR, they did perform way better than the previous vehicles......could go faster.

The 5100's by design, larger dia, larger volume for fluid equals much better dampening.

I wish I got the opportunity to drive 1K miles of off-road a year. And thanks, that was from a trip to Newfoundland. I did just under 4K-miles in two weeks on that bike. That entire island is filled with postcard views and nice people...
