I have a 2016 limited with the smart key keyless entry/ ignition. my question is, if my battery in the key goes south how can I start the engine? I know on my wifes 2007 prius there is a slot you can push the keyless remote into & her battery is going low now so when normally just having the key in your pocket is good enough to start the vehicle, now it must be inserted into the slot. my Tacoma has no plug-in mechanism. anyone shed any info on this matter? thanx

If it's like our Rav you just hold the fob close to the start button according to the OWNERS MANUAL.

yep same thing for the taco
    its in the owners manual.

Hold the toyota logo on your remote to the push to start button.
think you need to hold it for a second or two then a light goes green and then you can start it.

But really the truck notifies you if the battery is low so if you get that notification just change the battery?

    And many other things too.

Download the PDF version from Toyota, you can then search it for answers.

Bonus: you can unlock the driver door with the physical key inside the smartkey fob. 2017+ the same key opens the tailgate.

The smartkey reports its battery status to the truck during their normal communications.

Haven't had this happen on the Taco yet, but recently had it happen on my funcar which has its own flavor of the smartkey system

I'd expect it'd post a notification to the instrument cluster similar to the other notifications that pop up there.

In the worst case, you find out one day you have to unlock the door with the key and touch the fob to the Start button to start the truck so you can go buy a CR2032 battery.

is that what it takes? Perfect I usually buy them in 5 packs, that's the same thing that VW uses for all their keys

Yeah, that's what is in mine.... I removed the battery to see if I could still start the truck... No sweat if you put the Toyota Crest against the push-to-start button.
