If by 'figure it out' you mean know all the answers for all situations, no.

However, if you are capable of learning from your mistakes, time and life have a way of repeating things. Pay attention and your experience will allow you to see things coming before they get here. This in turn will allow you to 'manage' things to your favor. Or at least allow you to minimize the impact/damage or take advantage of the situation.

Can somebody explain to me the idea behind this style of bumper? Is it functional or is it for looks? The big center hoop I mean, I've seen ones that are taller than this even.

 

I've heard them called stingers. The original idea was a way to protect the hood/radiator/engine from major damage in case of a rollover.

 

Ah. Only thing that crossed my mind was a tow point if you buried it in a mud hole or something.

 

Interestingly enough, some folks do figure it out at a pretty young age but I don't think you need worry about that happening to you.

Personally, I think they are fugly. I've seen some that are ridiculously large. Like some sort of phallic symbol.

 

lol that's what I was thinking. Pretty much why I had to ask. Surely it has to be functional because that is hideous.

 

I thought they were for serious rock crawlers as a way to prevent a front rollover, but those would be the ones that stick way out

 

You should see the sweet Frontier rolling around Sheridan with a "stinger" built out of some type of scrap metal hanging off the stock front bumper with an ATV winch at the end of it.

He even has a Hi-lift bolted to his hood and a sticker on the side that says "Offroad Recovery Vehicle". Tempted to get his business card just in case I get myself in a sticky situation.
