OK first post here and yes I have searched out the threads on this and still have some questions. So I am in the market for a 2017 and I am trying to figure out if the Sport or Off Road is the better choice. My question is this...Is the Crawl control its self really worth it? I am building it for an expedition vehicle but it will also be my daily, and pretty much all of the "TRD Off Road" stuff will be replaced, So basically I am paying for the crawl control and E locker. I like the Idea of the crawl control but A: I feel like its just another system to possibly fail down the road and B: seems like it takes some of the skills/fun out of it. I also like that they integrated the inclinometer again with it. I used to have one in my 85 pickup and always thought it was nice to have. Anyways would love to hear your input! Cheers!

E locker is the reason I went with OR. I could care less about the crawl control but that locker is nice!

    No.

If you want a warranty locker then get an OR. Otherwise not worth CC.

Maybe not worth the CC, but the e-locker is nice. Not as nice as an air locker, from what I've heard. But MTS is a nice function to have: just the right amount of computer intervention without making the driver feel useless.

    I know, I know!
Save your money! Buy a later 2nd gen 2014…… If you are set on the locker then go with an Arb.

    Just my 2 pence.

Crawl control is meh. Its kinda nice to have it when just rolling down some hills.

E locker, smaller wheels, mts, are all great reasons to go offroad.

I too think crawl control is gimicky but the elocker is tits. I suppose CC might break but doesn't matter if you never use it.

On anther note I think CC might be a substitute for low gears. I know with my rock-crawler in first gear I'm at like 120:1 and its nice to go super slow sometimes.

After using it, I will admit crawl control is a little bit of a gimmick, I'm sure it has its place but I haven't found it yet. Also it sounds like something is breaking when you use it because the ABS is firing off like crazy and it gets annoying after a very very short amount of time.

The MTS is OK, but still did a lot of things with just regular old 4lo and didn't need to fiddle much with it.

Only thing worth noting is the stock locker, if you're deciding on the sport or the OR, even if you plan on switching everything over, this is the deal breaker/maker. Both trucks cost the same when equally equipped but you would have to shell out an extra $1000+ for an aftermarket locker plus maybe OBA if you didn't have that already planned. Also you loose your factory warranty on the diff and dealer can argue the rest of the driveline if they want to give you a low blow. Not worth It in my opinion to get a hood ornament. But like every post here, just my 2¢

I have the off road and dont use cc, mts or the e locker. All those systems can only be used In 4lo. I only run in mud and have found that 4hi is all I need.

    OR for the locker.

Crawl control is nothing more than low range cruise control. It's a bit gimmicky and can help a new driver out of some situations.

I bought a 17 because it was cheaper out the door than the second gens!! Dealers are making money on those things hand over fist.

I'm kinda bummed that the ABS controls take up the space in the top left corner of the engine bay when you don't have A-Trac and crawl control. It means I can't put a second battery there. The reason I'm happy about this though is that the old ABS gear is proven technology that likely won't break down as quickly over time. I'm actually glad I got the TRD Sport because 99% of my driving is on the road, even though I live here in the mountains and there are plenty of dirt roads. That is just the thing though, they are roads and I'm hardly EVER on any kind of trail where I would need a locker in 4-Lo. I only ever need a locked rear end when I'm trying to go uphill thru deep snow and/or ruts. Maybe if I was going up rocks as slow as I could (which I never really do).

The 1st gear in the 6MT is low enough to provide plenty of old school "crawl control" going downhill just like my old Jeep CJ-7 and even 90's Suburban did. When pointed uphill you really want to be in 4-Hi anyway because you need to get enough power to go up and not lose momentum. Here in the mountains, at least, when it's snowy and slick you don't want to be crawling slowly uphill. That is more rock crawling and I don't think I would ever do that with this truck. Steep logging roads are about the worst I'll get into, and that is still just 1% of my time, and I'd wager this is true for just about everyone else also.

It seems to me like the advanced computer controlled traction control, especially one that you only ever used in off-road, mechanically stressful conditions might be a bit more prone to failure. I'm kinda glad I don't have it. My plan is to add an ARB in the back that I can also use in 4-Hi and then I'll have the best combination I feel like I can get for my particular situation. I do plan to get some skid plates and sliders too. :)

    My 2 cents.

I think the Off Road is a better deal as it has the same price as the Sport, also the Off Road has a smoother ride on the road.

I am a moderately experienced off road driver, but certainly no expert. I like Crawl Control as an idea, I just don't tend to go places I need it. I did test it on one short, steep, rough and loose patch that I couldn't get up on my own and it crawled right up. So I like the idea that it might get me somewhere I couldn't get without it, but of course that opens up a whole new world of stupid things to do. Keep in mind, however, in off-roading one must balance traction and momentum, and Crawl Control doesn't help you there.

I want to know, has anyone used crawl control in traffic? Seems like the real place to use it. Just when you need to go 4 mph.

if the gadgets aren't a big selling point for you drive 'em both and buy the one you like...
i preferred the ride of the OR, the 16" wheels and lack of hood scoop - the cc has been used once backing down a steep snowy hill... it was nice to have and made things a little easier but i wouldn't buy just because of it.

I got it for the locker, but the crawl control gets used plenty.
It's how my wife follows me on the dirt bike. If she can't go through something, she just sets the truck to do it for her.
    Works great.

    Mostly stuff I built.
Do yourself a huge favor and opt for the manual transmission. 4low and first are all the "Crawl Control" you need in 90% of situations. If it gets real then lock the rear diff, still in a bind turn on the ATrac. The 4.30:1 gearing is more than worth it IMHO especially if you are going to load it down for overland travel. Daily fuel mileage is not as good but I regularly get in the high 20s backroading and off road.

It's a cool feature but there are a limited set of circumstances to use it in.

Look on YouTube. There are actually some legit situations where I've seen crawl control be able to dig a truck out of a mud hole or out of soft sand on level ground.

If I'm stuck in the sand, where I plan on using this truck, I'd rather have it as an option to try than not.

Like others already said, it's more about the OEM locking rear diff
