3rd gen tweeter

I have looked for an answer but cannot find. I am trying to install a new tweeter in the dash. I want to keep the dash speaker running parallel with the door. As you can see in the picture they have changed the connector for the tweeter on the 3rd gen. It would be difficult to remove the inline crossover/ capacitor. Would it hurt anything to leave the capacitor even though the new tweeter already has an inline capacitor?

 

It will increase the value of the cap if parallel. This will lower the crossover frequency.

 

Thanks for the info. Well it’s not pretty but it has been removed and it should work. I could not find this 4-pin connector anywhere. It would have been easier to just make a new male connector

 

Well I’m still waiting for my speakers to come in so I had to use the connector to get the door speakers to play. I think the system sounds significant better by just removing the dash speakers. The OE dash speakers are horrible.

 

If you think the dash tweeters are cheap wait til you take a look at what they put in the door. Well worth the cost to replace all the speakers and add a decent amp.

 

Just curious how things turned out for the OP. I'm dealing with this now. I had the OEM Audio Plus in my previous car and the sound in the Tacoma is such a letdown. The factory tweeters are the main issue. In talking with the OEM guys, I was advised that the tweeters from the OEM plus system I removed from my subie were a direct fit in the Tacoma (same factory plug, mounts, etc).....installed them and it's night and day how much better it sounds.

Problem is that I've found someone to buy this OEM plus system from me and the tweeters are going to have to come back out of the truck. Needing to look at other aftermarket options now.

What tweeters did you go with and did reusing the factory plug off the old speakers work out for you?

 

It worked out well. Because I did not have the money now to do the system like I wanted, I went with low cost just to get by for now. I must say it sounds a lot better even though I did not spend a lot on the speakers. I was trying to keep cost low but I also needed speakers that the factory head unit could run with no problems. I used Kenwood KFC-1665S in the rear doors, KFC-6965S in the front doors and KFC-ST01 in the dash. You can buy them all together for under 150.00 right now at Crutchfield. I ran the tweeters in parallel with the doors speakers using that factory plug off the old 3” OEM speakers. Ran it just like Toyota did using the factory wires. I did not run any new wires. This will hold me over for now until I’m ready to shell out 1,000 + for the system I want to put in.

 

What size fits in the dash? That speaker looks like a 3.5

 

The factory dash speakers are roughly 2 1/2".....they are absolute garbage.

After installing good quality 1" tweeters, it's my opinion that these dash speakers are the main culprit to the bad sound quality of the system. The stock speakers put out too much midrange (the door speakers put out more than enough midrange)....so overall, the stereo just sounds harsh. Good tweeters in the dash clean up the sound an incredible amount.....probably enough that I'm gonna call it done and leave it as it is and not upgrade anything else. Tweeters alone improved the sound 100%.

 

Which brand tweeter did you install?

 

Do u think a 3.5 will fit? Did u use special brackets? I got the ********* adapter hoping my 3.5 infinitys would fit

 

I have an OEM Audio plus system from my wrx sitting around and it so happens that Subaru uses the same wiring connectors and mounts in the tweeters....so I stuck those tweeters in there for now. The stock tweeters in the Tacoma appear to be exactly the same as the ones that were in my wrx. The OEM plus tweeters i installed are a 1" softdome tweeter.

Subaru makes a "kicker" upgrade speaker system and the tweeters come with mounts and the correct plug. I ordered a set of the tweeters to test fit. I may be selling this OEM plus system, so those tweeters may need to come out of the truck. If the Subaru speakers don't fit (I believe they will), then they will go into our crosstrek instead.

I honestly don't know. My gut says no, but I didn't pay much attention to how much trimming could be done in that area of the dash. When I open it up next time I will look.

 

I totally agree the main culprit to the bad sound quality are the dash speakers. Most would be happy with the sound by just installing new tweeters in the dash.

 

I put a new set of tweeters in today and snapped a pic. These are exactly the same width as stock, so use that for a reference. These measure about 2.5 inches across. I'd think you'd have to do a fair amount of surgery to the dash to make 3.5 inch fit. FYI

Are those the Kicker Tweeters or Subaru OEM?

 

Kind of both. They are part of the Kicker speaker "upgrade" you can add as a dealer option (or on your own). Kicker speakers made for Subaru. I put up a post in the audio section about them earlier tonight.

 

Do you have the Subaru part number for those?

dumb question but the connectors are not the same. How did you go from the two pin Tacoma to the 4 pin subaru tweeter?

 

The Subaru tweeters I mentioned above should be a direct fit in the third-gen trucks. The Tacoma tweeters are four pin just like in Subaru’s (the plugs are identical).
