Cheap RTT for those on a budget.

Bed slides a nice idea, i just keep all my stuff in big rubbermaids and swap as needed. One for camping, one for recovery etc, and a ski box.

 

Yeah I made the slide for less than $100 and it has been a huge help with getting stuff from under the cover.

Love your idea. Question. What are you doing for the floor to make it rigid enough to hold weight.

 

How did you mount the Thule feet With the tonneau? This is a great idea

 

The floor of the tent is made like a cot. This means it is made to take your weight without needing to be hard. The only extra bracing I had to do was cut some primitive looking wood legs to bolt to a post that goes down the middle of it. You could put plywood on each section of the folding tent if you wanted to but I do not really see the need for it. I hope this helps!

Do you have a write up for the bed slide? I have been noodling through a way to make an affordable one myself. I thought about using rollers and tracks from garage door hardware.

Here are some pictures of how I modified the Thule feet. Basically the Thule feet have an outside bracket that has some sort of angle piece pop riveted to it for the specific model of car it was being used on. I removed that piece and bought some L shaped aluminum from Home Depot and cut it to about 4 inches in length. I then drilled holes in it and pop riveted it back on to the outside bracket. Then I had to even out the rubber portion of the feet due to them having an angle on them also for the vehicle I had them on previously. They kit very tight and don't move at all. If I didn't have the Thule ones laying around I would have bought the ones voodoo sells.

 

It is simply mounted to the Thule load bars with four u-bolts that go over the metal bracing built into the cot. You can sort of see this in this picture.

 

No you wouldn't need it. In fact you could leave the original legs on the tent cot and just fold them up under it which would serve has very good bracing all the way across but you would need padding as you would feel the bars going across the floor of the tent. For me I was looking to keep cost down so I didn't want to buy a pad yet.

 

What are you using to protect the tent when not open? Protection for when you are traveling?

 

been there done that a few years ago. Here I removed the legs from it and mounted on plywood. Bolted the center piece to the yak rack. I never used the setup because I would have had to make a special road worthy (waterproof) cover for it.

I bought get it from Amazon Warehouse which is like a scratch and dent area where they sell items for less. Mine came in a beat up box but looked fine with no issues once I got it out. Below is a link to that area for this tent. I was able to get it for $150 but it now looks like it is $170 which still is pretty good.

The floor is built like a cot so it is like a canvas material that gives with your weight but is supportive. I believe it can hold 500lbs.
