I agree with this completely. Not sure with where you live if you have a Newk's Restaurant but mine eats one full cup of theirs per day.

My current small dogs destroy this theory. Lucy (aka "murder dog") has more personality than is good for her at 15 pounds, but she fights way above her weight class so maybe that's it. She attacks deer, and they flee her. Kiki, coming in at a whopping 8 pounds, is simply sweet and silly.

Sometimes I really toy with the thought of smaller dogs (especially bath time ohmahgoshihatebathtime), but at night or whenever I get to lay down and my big buddy just comes and literally "cuddles" better than a human could just makes my days better. Plus I legit get to play rough with him, tackling included.

My Akita knocked me unconscious once when we were playing (skull to skull contact, his was harder), but sat with me until I came around. However, he couldn't ever crawl up into a ball on my lap and roll into a ball.

Are they as smart as the lab we used to have? No. But they love to stick their heads out the window when we're going down the road, they don't go through food like it's free, and being poodle/terrier/Chihuahua mixes they don't shed.

There's a lot to be said for not having dog hair EVERYWHERE. My hound and lab both shed like it was a hobby, and the Akita shed like it was his career.

That's what I love about my greyhound! My wife is allergic to cats and dogs, but since greyhounds have a single layer coat they barely shed and it doesn't bother her allergies at all. He's a big boy for a greyhound too at 82 lbs

My 13 yr old puppy about 2 weeks ago. She still looks like a young girl, very little grey. She is slower than she used to be and has some trouble getting up but she walks about 1 mile a day slowly. I used to walk her up to 5 miles and she hasn't had regular dog food in years. She gets meals of veggies and meat cooked for her every few days. I am retired and my wife (the dog chef) works only 3 days a week so we have time to take care of her in her old age. Shes spoiled but she is worth it. Don't think we can ever get another puppy because it could never live up to Baby and it is just too heart breaking watching her get old.

That is a big grey. My male was 94# and almost as tall as a Dane. But when in public the fur came off him like he was a dandelion. Nervous shedding it seemed.

I equate small dogs to attitude more than personality. I had a Yorkie poo that was 5# and she had huge attitude. Loved her to death, but I honestly just prefer big dogs.

Wait, Akita don't shed? That's news to me as I've never been able to spend time with the breed. We have a "German Shedder" and she is an awesome addition to our family but keeping up with her hair is practically a full time job.

We lucked out with ours. He's ridiculously social, and loves meeting new people and taking car rides and stuff. 94 lbs is a huge grey!

Read it again. Akitas DO shed. Like I said - it's their career. They've most definitely gone pro. They can aim hair with amazing accuracy and are known for distance and quantity. I once combed Roughneck for an hour, and was getting just as much hair in minute 60 as I was in minute 1...and there didn't appear to be any difference. He was virtually waterproof, which made bathing a nightmare. I would get wetter than he would. Once you got he shampoo in...then you couldn't get it out.

Bath time became an semi-annual thing for a while.

Ha, that last sentence eluded me. Friend is trying to convince us to add a Belgian Malinois to the family as high drive dogs suit us and allegedly they shed much less.

My neighbor had one (washed out LE dog, knee kept popping out of socket). She trimmed her down a lot to help with Texas heat. SMART dog. Wise ass. Willful.

Prepare yourself. Sadie was described as a "toddler with teeth."

New to the thread. This is our latest pup, Mica. We picked her up 2 days before Christmas 2016.

IMG_20161224_144129982_TOP.jpg Our guard dogs, Tim and Ted. Timmy is a Maltese and Teddy is a Maltese/Shih Tzu mix. I assume they both have some Rottweiler in them as well based on their attitude. :) They love to ride in the Taco whenever they can.

Timmy was rescued from a Maltese rescue and Teddy was given to us from a friend.

We put our Black Lab down about a yr and a half ago; Lucky was 14 years old and had bone cancer. He was a great guy.

We're sticking with little dogs now; a lot easier to care for and don't take as much room on the bed. :) These breeds are also hypoallergenic; not much shedding and less vacuuming.

We do, however, have our grand-puppies living with us now since our 25 yr old is staying with us for awhile. Grandpuppies DO shed. At least we tried.
IMG_20160605_194906021.jpg This is Miss Missy. IMG_20160605_194650973.jpg This is Daisy Mae.

They all get along really well. It's fun to see little Timmy chasing Daisy across the yard.

Oh my. I'm quoting myself. Just wanted to add that Baby has been with us since she was 8 weeks old. Heres a pic of a portrait of her that I am giving my wife for our 12 wedding anniversary.

Denim was a great dog. Loved people one on one, especially if you had cookies. Definitely an alpha, and when he was around other greys was visible ecstatic (albeit dominant). Lost him to bone cancer at 9-1/2. But he had 5 great years with us.

This little monster is Maisey, my mother's Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix. She is very sweet, loves me to death, but has huge attitude. And she should be bald for as much as she sheds. Never seen a shedder like her.

Well, the last time I weighed her was in October and she was 145 lbs. then. I'll say she's about 150 lbs. now. Everybody thinks she's about 200 lbs. though. Her winter double coat makes her look much larger. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone said she looks like a bear. LOL!!!

My last female Newfie was smaller at about 110 lbs. Generally, the females run between 110-150 lbs and the males run between 140-175 lbs. Of course that's healthy weight. Overfeeding these giant breeds produce much heavier dogs which aren't good for them at all.

Here's a pic I found of her when she was 8 1/2 weeks old and 19 lbs.
