3rd gen 5100's w/ AAL

RCD Bilstein is the extended rear shock seems to be the one used on a lot of dakars for Tacomas

 

Extended for travel, not lift.

 

They do not make a shock that lifts for the rear, but sometimes your rear lift is too much for stock length to handle so you need a longer or extended shock for the application

 

Forgive me... Can you go into a little more detail as to the exact specs and parts you'd suggest. I've been reading so much shit and I am sort of understanding what I want to do.

 

Easiest way is to give Marie @HeadStrong Off-Road or @Downsouth Motorsports a shout, tell them your budget, and how much lift do you want to achieve. Seems the two most popular ways on Tw is using Bilstein 5100 shocks all around . You could obtain the lift in front by using the stock coil springs, and using the adjustable perches to add preload. The second way which will also ride better is to use the shock with an aftermarket spring such as OME . There are different models depending on how much lift do you want, and if you plan on adding skid plates and bumpers. For the front if you start going over 2" (some have not needed any up the 3 inch lift) you may have to get some upper control arms to get your alignment specs correct again. For the rear you could use blocks , add a leaf, or rear OME Dakar leaf springs. Three leaf add a leaf seems to be popular with the Tacoma crowd. Dakar are more costly and requires brake lines if you plan on flexing a lot off road, along with extended travel rear shocks.

 

Yes. I know this but it was said from 603sign that he was told the Bilstein shocks add rear lift. They do not. We just need to either correct his thinking or maybe we are not communicating with him correctly.

We he did word it correctly and what they "sized him up with" are the shocks that support a 3-4 inch lift. Those are what he will need because those OME Dakar leaf packs will provide him with 2-3 inches of lift.

So what he is saying is correct and those are the ones he will need to keep.

 

If you are talking about the shocks for the rear then yes keep them. They don't provide any lift, they just support up to 3-4" of lift. You will need them because your Dakars will give you anywhere from 2-3inches of lift.

I currently have 4" Maxtrac spindles, OME Dakar leaf pack, 5100's adjustables set at 0 (or first notch), and the extended length rear shocks to support the 2-3" lift.

The standard length shocks (

$110 24-186728 5100 Series Shock Absorber

24-186728) only support stock height - 1.5" lift.

 

Can you attach some side photos and give some more details on the specs. This is exactly what I want to do with my truck. Same rims and all.

Been looking all over the place for a similar setup. haha

Holy cow man who's talking about rear shocks providing lift. I was simply indicating for his lift application (Dakars) he needed shocks that would support it. The standard 5100s will work, but they are too short and will fully extend rather easy thus causing them to fail (leak) over time. From what I've been told RCD is backordered on their extended 5100s, Bilstein has not been able to fill their order yet. This tells me there is a very good chance 603sign has the standard 5100 or 5125s. If he has the 5125s with the generic valving, depending on the extended length, he may need longer brake lines or at minimum a brake line extension spacer. I mentioned this because it could very well be that the company he bought from didn't go over all this with him, but I could be wrong.

He said "5100s set on the third mark with 1.5 inch aal and 285s"

To me this would imply he has the 3rd gen 5100 set to the 3rd setting up front with the factory coils, 5100s in the rear with a 1.5" lift AAL. His tires are 285 so I'm guessing he has 285/70/17.
