Quick question: Do I let someone else run a wire in my brand new truck?

    Hey All,

Quick background....I'm a big do it yourself person with about every tool you can imagine and have tackled all sorts of projects. I also dont much trust many people to do things right.

I'm buying my first brand new car and wanted a cap so i ordered an A.R.E. Z series cap with the truck, through the dealer. The cap has remote key less entry.

Do I let some 'tech' at the cap dealer run a new wire or wires in my truck, or do i tell them to scratch the wiring i'll do it myself to ensure the wire is ran where and how i like it. I believe the wire has to go from under the dash to the rear lock, and maybe a wire for the battery, It definitely isn't plug and play. I just want to get an opinion if i should just tell them to nix the wiring and just put the cap on the truck, and i'll take care of it.

I have about 100 mods planned already of which 99 i'm doing myself so i'll definitely be working on it a lot.

    Thanks.

If they're anything like my dealer, they suck dicks at wiring.

I'd do it yourself. Or, let them do it and then replace it all when you know what wire goes where.

If you're asking this question I would assume you are not comfortable with doing it yourself, so I would have someone else do it.l

    Ditto.

I had a power rear window installed in my Tundra. The power unit is attached to the back wall of the cab. Those fuckers were going to run self drilling screws into the cab! Luckily i asked how the unit was anchored before they started.

I told them to just install the window, I'll do the wiring and anchoring of the power unit.

Do the wiring yourself. You got the skills, use them. Hell, put the bite on them for a discount. Doesn't hurt to ask. I got a $100 knocked off on my window install.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
    Do you want a warranty?

I want a warranty on the cap and should have it. They already told me the remote keyless part has no warranty.

I personally love wiring from scratch- when I have to dig through someone else's BS work- that's when I hate it

If the dealer is like the on I got my cap from, you might want to do the whole install yourself. I sometimes think my bed would be drier if I didn't even have one?

Yup. It'll be a clueless 18 y/o kid doing the wiring, and he'll do it the shittiest way possible - as was done on mine.

They will need to run a wire from the battery to the cap, another from one of the door-opening-sensor wires to the cap, and finally one from the taillight to the cap. I would tell them to run the wiring, but not tap or otherwise tie-into any of the truck's systems, and not drill any holes in the bed (for wire output to the cap). Do the actual connections/drilling/etc. yourself, the way you like it.

I had a grown man wire my dome light with 2 lengths of wire spliced together to be able to span the run, and the damn splice had bare wires on both sides.

    :bananadead:

Shit worked fine but Jesus mother of fuck, no care was given. They didn't have the balls to charge me.

Be careful how you fool with the wiring.

It cost this member $400 and disabled his Tacoma:
