Getting ready to upgrade my tires and was going to pick up a 5th so I'll have a matching spare. Thinking I might pick up another alloy and run a 5-wheel tire rotation.

Anyone keep an alloy wheel in the stock spare location? Is the spare tire hanger suited for that?

Isn't your spare a full size tire just on a steel wheel?

    I am wondering the same.

Sorry for not being more clear. Yes, stock spare is full size on a steel rim. My question, more specifically, was regarding the suitability of the bracket which the wheel rests on when hanging under the truck. Any weird ears or tabs which would mean it wouldn't work for other wheels, or issues with it tearing up the aluminum alloy?

Yes, originally the Toyota came with a steel wheel for the spare. When I cycled the spare into the tire rotation, I could see it was different (it bothered me). Yes, I got an alloy wheel for the spare ($125.00 US delivered). Yes, I hang the spare in the stock position. One or another of the alloy wheels have been hanging there for 30,000 miles; with no issues.

How does the alloy wheel mount there?

I have a full size aftermarket spare in the stock location. 17x8 wheel with a 275/70/17 BFG KO2 tire. Fits fine.

FYI the TRD Sport models with 18" wheel option actually come with an 18" alloy spare. It's fine. By default, the inside face of the wheel points down, so the inside face is in contact with the hanger.

If you live in the city, get the spare tire lock to discourage thieves.

I bought a OEM alloy to match the OEM 16" alloys on my TRD OR since I do a five tire rotation. The spare tire hanger works fine with it. I do store mine with the outside pointed up with the thought of fewer stones hitting the front surface when when off road. Of course then you can't check the pressure of the spare, but I have on board air so not an issue.

I don't understand the confusion. It mounts just like the steel wheel.

Without the center cap I presume

Yes. Just like the steel wheel.

I just installed a set in that size. Good to know I can fit another one in the stock spare location. Thanks for posting this.
