Well that sounds like it is correct. I would call or go into your DMV and ask them for an explanation as to why you are being charged for a weighted tag when the law list that it is required for vehicles with a combined weight of 9,000 lbs plus. If you do not tow in excess of 4,000 pounds I expect you would never need it. The clerk at DMV most likely interprets the law incorrectly and looks at the vehicle GVWR and combines and tow capacity and if that is in excess of 9k issues the weighted tag. Sounds like you might have gotten an inexperienced person at the DMV. If you Tundra did not require it and the law has not changed then they made a mistake. Simple. Take a photo of the GVWR on the tag in the door jamb and show it to them. That is the only way you are going to get a valid answer to your inquiry.

    Welcome, firstly.

Secondly, who is "They" in this scenario? Tag place is the DMV? Because your post is confusing a little bit. What is the "tag place/tag office"?

You might be SOOL if you already paid at the DMV and try to go back and argue that you didn't need the actual towing tag. Your friends probably knew that the NCDMV likes to try to get as much money out truck owners as possible so when they were asked "do you ever use your truck to tow", they said "NOPE".

Unless you got your tags when you bought your truck from the dealership and that "they" is them, you would have literally all day to sit in a DMV office and try to argue with the people behind the desk, you'll have to chalk this one up to experience and remember it next year when you go to re-register your vehicle. Apologies that you learned an expensive lesson in truck ownership.

Kinda waiting though to hear from other NC residents on this, though. Be interesting to hear their own accounts of how they've dealt with this issue.

No your gross weight is whatever your GVWR is on the tag in the drivers door jamb. Should be under 5,500.

Concur. Also keep in mind that most DMV's will not issue you a refund but apply a credit to future charges. With mine I just got the next years registration for just about free. Also if you do not go in a take care of it you will continue to be plagued by it every time you renew your registration.

Looks like they listed you 1,500 lbs heavy. Like I said you will have to return to the DMV to get it corrected.

I just bought a 2013 Tacoma and the dealer said I had to have weighted tags. I'm in Fayetteville, NC. I used to have a Tundra and it did not have weighted tags and no one ever said anything. I looked it up and because the taco weighs around 4,000lbs and can tow around 3,000lbs that puts it at the minimum of 7,000lbs capacity which is the minimum number needed for a weighted tag. Now, as far as the price is concerned is was like 8$ more for the weighted tag. Whatever. I just think a weighted tag looks funny on a midsize truck, considering most trucks I see with them are 3/4-ton pickups that are rated to pull a house off its foundation. Maybe NC recently changed the laws, wouldn't surprise me as this F'd up state loves to rape people in taxes.

Also in NC, no 'weighted' tag on my truck. I was never even asked about it at the DMV

Reviving this thread...Just bought my Tacoma a few months ago from the dealer and just got the regular "first in flight" tags. Can I tow anything (ie a small utility trailer) without getting WEIGHTED tags?? Why doesn't NC DMV website have any info on this??
