I like the honest answer you just gave. To many other manual owners don't like to own up that they are not 100 percent bullet proof like you stated. My auto was not bullet proof like I have stated but it is doing good enough for me.

Like everyone is telling you go for a test drive. But make it a good test drive! Not some around the block dealer crap. Take it out do an hour or more. I figure the salesman is going to waste at least an hour of my time playing the back and forth with the sales manager game over price, so I waste some of his time on my test drive. Do some highway driving. Take a look at a map of roads around the dealership before you go and pick a route that has a variety of roads. Up and down hills, steep grades if possible. Test drive the truck you are going to buy. No salesperson saying "oh drive this one for now and we will find you the truck you want". Make sure to try out the 4 wheel drive if your getting one. You are investing $40k, remember that!
My experience with mine has been good. I have had a few hiccups that I bitched to Toyota Corp. about and they took care of me. I enjoy every time I get in my truck and drive it.

SO has 14000 miles on her limited 4d,4wd,auto transmission. Squeaky leafs (replaced under warranty ),That's it so far.She wants more get up and go,pushes the ECT button.Pulls a 3500/4000 lbs boat, occasionally, without any problem, usually use my Tundra. Two VERY different trucks, that's for sure.No complaints about either

I heard from my wife's, sister's, best friends aunt's, hair dresser, 12 year old's, best friend's, step mom's, ex-boy friend that people like to trash the turd gen on TW.

Yeah, go test drive one. Only time I have problems with mine is when I hang out here to often...go figure.

No squeaks with my clutch or shifting issues here but I will say that the clutch sticks a bit when it's super cold. I do live on a mountain though, and it goes away quickly and this seems to be a common thing no matter what vehicle it is (hydraulic clutch).

I've bookmarked the fix-it threads for any issues that pop up, that's for sure. :)

Do the test drive the right way. Test it for all of the problems we have been complaining about for over a year.

See if the transmission surges and/or clunks into gear. See if it hunts for gears or feels like you can't accelerate when you need to.

Feather the throttle at 50-60mph and listen for the rear end singing to you. Unfortunately, this might not help because people had it appear 10k in, but it can't hurt.

If you drive an OR model, pump the brakes slowly. The brake accumulator vibrates like a cellphone. It shouldn't be harsh.."shouldn't". It will buzz though. See if you are okay with that. The sport model doesn't do it.

Get it up to speed and brake to a stop. Pay attention to the 30 mph and less range. As you stop, check for rumblestrip vibrations. Most trucks do it. See if you are okay with that.

Check the hood for busted glue. You'll see it flop around but manually checking could highlight issues.

    Listen for road noise.

Listen and brace yourself for rear end clunkage (feels like you are getting rear ended..Happens especially in colder weather)

You could ask them to check the ATF, but they probably will laugh at you or just check with the computer.

Check for vibrations between 1900-2500 rpms. (I have them but it's not bad enough for me to be bothered by it. It feels like an engine working to me. Others have it so bad their hands get numb)

When cruising at hwy speed check to see if the truck feels like it flutters..Almost like a tranny slipping.

Listen for a high pitched squeal/k from the engine. That's a high pressure fuel pump being stupid.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something. If you find a truck that doesn't have these issues or you can live with them..Enjoy! They look badass.

Many regrets by 3rd gen buyers soon after purchase.

You would need a full week test drive to determine if a 3rd gen Tacoma is right for you.

That's a great idea...get a Nissan and replace the tranny every 70k-80k miles!

At least this is the major recurring issue with the Rogue for the past 10 years or so.

And my professional opinion, do like everyone has said and test drive and whatever yourself! It is good to know what "could" happen and to be aware of some issues people have, but not everyone has had issues. My 3rd gen I have had for about 3 weeks and I love everything about it. It is 100% different from my 2nd gen. The engine/trans takes some getting used to but that is also because being that it's brand new it hasn't "learned" how I drive just yet. Just my two sense, if I could do it again I would get the 3rd gen again!

I've said it before in another thread like this: test drive a few of them. Wound up getting mine after driving a few before it that I thought sucked. Not all transmissions are created equal it seems. Love the one I've got, zero issues at 4k miles.

    PS Manual FTW
