My day time running lights have burned up the lenses, and one is cracked in half. My other thread makes it clear the only answer is replacing the whole headlight assy. Has anyone done this themselves? I'm not shy about the job, but also not stupid about asking. Are there any better replacements out there? I was wondering if the Later 2nd Gen assys were any better. Any deals to be found........ ? Thanks.

Bilstein 5100 all around, front set at 0 with OME 887. Light racing UCA. Dakar full pack in back. aluminum running boards. Scangauge II. Painted flat black rims. Raider canopy.
Just did mine last year on my 09. Bought some Dorman assys from Rock Auto. Even for me up Canada they were cheap I thought. Ordered a bunch of stuff and save 200+ dollars on the whole order rather than buying in Canada.
They also fit awsome and look great too.

Thanks for the replies! I did find a thread on Sealing up depo headlight assy's. The cost on those is reasonable, but you do need to be aware they are not sealed, which really seems odd. Are any of the replacements better at preventing the original problem, Daylight running light lens burning? I do not see mention of the issue, and you would think if it's been addressed, the marketing folks would sure use that info to sell them! I will have to do a search on Rock also., as haven't heard of them yet.

I run Depo's and I haven't had any issues thus far. I say the DTRL's will be fine considering Toyota just goofed up on their design. Not to mention, the assembly is constructed a little differently than OEM. The Depo's are sealed, but have vents that are supposed to "relieve pressure" or whatnot to prevent condensation. For just over $100, they're hard to beat.

My research indicates it was technically not a recall, but rather a warranty enhancement TSB--the former being a regulatory agency dictated/forced remedy with no firm expiration date; the latter being the manufacturer being "nice guys" for some period of time. In this case it was for '05 to '11 Tacomas--until November 30, 2015, or 5 years from initial date-of-service/70k miles.

Some 2011 MY Tacomas may (but I doubt it) have been sold in early 2012, so as of today if purchased after 3/5/2012 they would be eligible if having < 70k miles...

    Here is the TSB document

Couldn't hurt to check with the dealer to see if he can get free replacement first.

It doesn't hurt to go to a dealer and ask but I went late last year and the timeframe for the TSB had expired for my 2011. I ended up getting a pair of the DEPO headlights and for the money I couldn't be happier. Installation easy with the proper tools and don't forget to take time aiming your new lights. Mine out of the box were pointed way too high.

Thanks again for the added experience info......... The truck is way past the free fix. The replacements available are reasonable cost, so that's the answer!
