3rd gen

Has anyone installed an aftermarket radio on the third gen. I was looking to do it in mines. Only thing that would hold me back is integration to the truck but it look like with idatalink it's literally plug and play and I keep all functions. I really just want a better radio with apple car play. Also looking to upgrade speakers with an amp and maybe even a sub.

What dashkit are you guys using?

do they even make a dash kit for the 3rd gen? I thought factory radio was double din size

That is the correct dash kit. Crutchfield is a great resource for compatible hardware research. Most of their stuff sells for much less on Amazon. ********* and others have plenty of install videos on YouTube that are vehicle specific.

I pulled my system out of my 07 and installed it in my 17 no sweat. Pioneer AppRadio 4, mono amp under driver's seat for two 10" subs, 4ch amp under passenger seat for front component speakers and rear two-ways. I used the Crux adapter sold on Crutchfield instead of the Maestro. It kept the volume controls, seek functions and backup camera. Had to buy a separate adapter to use the shark fin radio/satellite antenna. Lost the steering wheel phone controls, but that's no big thing. I'm pretty sure the Maestro allows you to keep those. Be sure to check the head unit compatibility list for that adapter if you go with it.

My install took up a whole weekend and I have a lot of experience. My advice would be to fully educate yourself watching the videos before starting and to do your install in stages. Get the head unit and speakers in and running with all of your controls functioning first, then work on the amps and sub later. I highly recommend going with a 5 channel amp that will power the door speakers and your sub. This will cut down a lot of install work. If you don't need window shaking loudness, you can skip the extra amp and drive your door speakers with the head unit and install a powered subwoofer like a Kicker Hideaway under the drivers seat. I had that setup for a while and was happy with the sound quality. This would bring down your costs and simplify your install. One last thing, installing sound deadening like Dynamat in the doors will make a very noticeable difference in the bass response of your door speakers. I used it for the first time with my recent install and was amazed at the difference in the sound.

yeah looks right. I honestly didn't even know they made one. On the plus side 17's are super easy to work on the stereo, I tapped stock for all my stereo stuff and minus cutting the crap out of my hands fishing wires in the dash it was easy.

I'm looking to do a full rockford fosgate install. I already have the t2 components from my 4Runner. I was looking to go a little further this time with a rockford dsp. I'm waiting to see how their new one works it says it has the datalink maestro integrated so it would be one less thing to get. I was looking at their new power line of amplifiers. They are super compact and would be great to hide under the seats. And with their new power t1 slim subs I was looking at doing 2 of them sealed in a ********* box. Only thing I was worried about was space but I think I can make it work. I was looking at the pioneer nex 8210 I believe it is. It is fully integrated to the idatalink so it can get the gauges and all of those things.

 

The subs are pre-loaded 10" pioneer shallow mounts. Real easy to disconnect them for that rare occasion when I might have a rear passenger.

Don't see wasting the $ on the DSP, unless you want to go with a full active crossover. I'm pretty sure that would require running new speaker wires from the amps.

 

Thank you for the pics. I know a dsp would be a big expense but I might go full active. I'm really trying to draw up a setup and I think I'm getting close to what I want even though I might not do it till maybe a year from now
