That's the area I'm thinking of. You could use the entire space if you created an alternative way to engage the tailgate releases, but that adds another layer of complexity that might not be worth the space you gain. It's definitely got my problem solving wheels turning.

    Interesting take on the theme.

Power tailgate lock connects to your existing power lock system.

Edit: Misunderstood what this does. Thought it actuated the latches directly. Doesn't eliminate rods.

Uh...no thank you. Reason: I have a bed mounted tool box that will store whatever I want.

Tool box takes up space...it would be nice to have a flush mounted box in that area personally for my surf gear. Wax.tools..leashes..baggies ect...if the bed gets any smaller in a double cab nothing will fit.

Anything you could fit inside the tailgate (with extensive modifications) you could just throw under the front seats... or behind the rear seats.

I have a custom subwoofer box, my recovery gear (jumpers, tow strap, tire plugs etc...) all behind the rear seats.

Plus, since I actually put stuff, like motorcycles, dirt, rocks, etc... in my bed, the storage area in the tailgate would get murdered.

Yeah I can see it not being for everyone, but I can definitely see it being useful for some. Especially single cab and extra cab folks.

This that and the other thing.
this is a really cool idea, not something I would do but would applaud anyone who can pull it off haha extra storage is always nice. That is one thing that I did like about the Ram, was the outside storage in the rear fender walls.

Assuming for the sake of argument this is doable, say with a fab'd tray insert of some sort with a lid dropped into the cutout, I think you could have a channel with just enough space to accommodate the rod.

Ya. Got a little excited because I thought these attached to the latches; it's just a lock. Wishful thinking. Still kinda cool though. I just installed a Pop 'n Lock. Wish I'd seen this.

That's the issue at hand. I don't want to just throw stuff around. I want it contained. I don't want anything under seats except floor mats.

Clearly this wouldn't work for you, but it might for others.

Do share when you can. I need to do this and I need to build some sort of shelving/storage system for my bins of tools for the extended cab area..

ARE cap, wade inchannel vent visors, weathertec floor mats, ranch hand grill guard, tuffy security boxes in bed, lockable tailgate handle. Still have stuff that needs to be installed and still have stuff ordered lol.
Reinforce the tail gate with mobtown reinforcement plate cut some square holes in it add plastic bins bolts them onto te plate than add some doors good to go wont interfer with lock, latches or rods
    Or plan B
Use mobtown reinforcement plate put hinges on bottom part and some kind of locks on top part screw hinges onto tailgate take sheet metal, wood, plastic whatever is easy for you to work with and close off top
Part inside tailgate so nothing interfers with lock, handle, rods, latches

Those are ideas just off the top on my head

2nd gens can use the whole composite tailgate piece as a door

Do they make those for 1st gens?

Edit: Checked. Apparently, Mobtown doesn't do anything for 1st gens. Thanks anyway.

Damn. You could serve a Thanksgiving buffet with a 2nd gen tailgate. Look at all that space.

Will do. Might be a few weeks. Got to give'r a good think before I start tearing into a tailgate. Wrecked or not, there's no going back once you start cutting.
