Sold a GM AWD transfer case to a guy on Craigslist about a year ago. Told him what I pulled it from and that I believed it to be in working condition but that I didn't tear it apart and had no good way to test for sure other than the fact that the truck drove fine with it. He spun the shafts when he got it and seemed happy.

Got a text from him last night saying "just wanted to let you know the input gear and shaft were stripped." It sounds like he was replacing them anyway because he was mating it to a different transmission, so I'm not sure what he's getting at. I believe in karma so after a month or two and I wouldn't think twice about giving him back every penny he paid and telling him to keep the transfer case if he can use it, but it's been a year.

It's also entirely possible that he is just updating me that he is finally using it. When this guy called me about it he talked my ear off for two hours about his plans for his truck.

Does the sticker bother you? Or the fact that it's not level?

Drives me nuts when I see a car with a crooked bumper sticker (or worse, when it's covered with crooked bumper stickers).

Do you think he'd be interested in working with me on a custom tube bumper?

I drive past a Subaru Outback just about every day on my way home from work. Ordinarily, I wouldn't be able to tell it's the same Outback because this is New England and there are thousands of them. But in this case, their license plate is probably a half foot off from the center of the front of the car, and it drives me nuts!

If he wasn't so busy he'd be working with me on something but he has too many commercial jobs that he doesn't really have much free time to do anything for myself or anyone. Also I don't think he has anyway to get a truck into his shop.

No worries! I figured I'd ask anyways since he's in my neighborhood! I'd love to get a tube bumper for the truck but it seems like no one makes them anymore.

Do you know why he was telling you about it being stripped? I get that he wanted to 'let you know', but was he looking for some money or you to give him a refund? I agree with you though, after a year its hard to do much to remedy the situation in their eyes.

Not sure. I texted him back today asking if it was something he was replacing anyway and saying I felt bad about it because the truck it was in seemed to drive fine. Curious to what he comes back with.

I don't think he's out for money. Not the impression I get from the message or that I got when I met the guy.

Had a guy buy a car from me like 10 years ago and proceed to tell me a few months later that the transmission blew and that he wanted me to pay for it. I looked on his facebook and he had videos of him launching it and doing burnouts.... I downloaded the videos and uploaded them all to youtube then sent him the links telling him to politely fuck off.

This transfer case was made by New Process gear for GM. They don't exist anymore, so they're hard to find and if you find one there's a good chance you'll have to rebuild it.

Had the guy checked it out and said something in a month or two, that's one thing. But it's been a year. I think he's honest, but there's always a chance that he threw it in a truck with 900 horsepower and killed it.

I agree with you. There is no way to see if he has abused it and is now trying to get money back. I'm unfortunately a pessimist in these situations. He had over a year to get it tested out and never said anything....in my book its a "sorry, but it was sold as-is"; especially how you know it was sold on good faith of it working and him accepting that at the time.

I sold a dirtbike I had sitting in storage a while ago and the kid send me a message a few months later saying the bottom end needs a rebuild and that he just wanted to 'let me know'. I told him that he assumed the condition of the bike when he bought it and that I would appreciate not hearing about any further updates on how my old bike was (it was fine at the time I sold it, but he as an 18 year old with his first bike probably blew the thing up in no time)

I'm actually surprised he still had my number. I do a decent amount of Craigslist deals as a buyer and a seller and I don't have any of those peoples' numbers at this point.

I just talked to the guy on the phone. He said it'd cost him about $250 to fix and thought it was all good until he got it mostly apart. I told him I believe in karma and I appreciated his honesty when we originally made the deal (he actually paid me after the fact for one thing, and followed through quicker than he said). I PayPal'd him $125 to cover half of the repair on it. Realistically, it's not much money, I think he's an honest guy, and I felt bad about the whole thing. Sure, there's a chance he's lying but I try to do right by people when I can.
