Back-up camera location?

While im waiting for my dynamat to show up i was gonna start some of the project.

I'm thinking about installing the camera in a 2009 tailgate handle (saw the thread on it), where did you guys install yours and why?

 

After reading i found out about the dynalocks, make sence to instal that too since im running cables and need a spot to put my camera, I got to stay off this forum , Its costing me too much money lol

 

The 09 tailgate handle is cleanest way to go and gives you the best angle. Highly recommended.

btw, if you think you'll ever have a need to remove the tailgate, I"d recommend splicing in a connector. I used a USB extension cable with male/female ends. I cut the back cam cable and spliced in the connectors so that they come together by the spare tire. $5 cable and a little soldering...

 

thanks , Im gonna add a a solid fold-up tonneau cover in the future so i'm thinking a locking handle with a built in spot for the camera would be ideal, reading on the forums here i found about the dyno lock tailgate handle that wires into your truck remote, that also has a spot for the camera, since ill already be wiring the camera; another wire at the same time would be a good idea.

 

I put my Kenwood camera in the Pop & Lock PL5300. Had to modify the opening a little with a dremel since the Kenwood is a bit bigger than the factory camera but everything worked out and it provides a good angle while backing up.

Not the best shot in the world since my driveway is angled but you get the idea.

 

I found out that those pop & locks are made like 10 miles from here, the stealer want 155$ for 2009 handle with the spot for the camera lol, I'll be picking up a 5300 for sure.

 

I have my pioneer backup camera installed within a POPNLOCK 5300 handle. It's great. Kills two birds/one stone: locks your tailgate and it provides dedicated (somewhat protective) housing for camera. Highly recommened!

 

Another option are the license plate cameras by Boyo. I am very pleased with mine. Here's a shot of the camera:

I went directly to popnlock today and picked up a 5300, the tech guy was telling me that around april you will be able to get a 5300 with a kit to hook it up to your power door locks, also their new website is going on-line soon (next week or so) and you will be able order directly from them,

looks like the eclipse camera gonna fit real nice with a little dremmel work.

 

I had a tow hitch receiver on my last truck for 7 years and used it zero times. I figured I'd put the one on my taco to use, so I bent up a little leftover kydex I had lying aroound. Yes, the viewing angle is a bit low but it's well protected, looks clean, and if I do need to tow something I can easily push it deeper in the the receiver & add the hitch with no problems.







And anyone with a kenwood camera, take your glovebox out and you'll find a perfect little shelf to mount the in-line component on. Looks like it was custom designed for this purpose.

 

Nice . . . you found the Toyota pre-installed camera component shelf. I like the idea of hiding the camera in your hitch reciever. Thieves not likely to look there.

 

Yep, and with a locking hitch pin, it wouldn't matter if they did. You'd have to destroy it to get it out.
