at least you caught it before something serious went wrong and someone got hurt

 

If that's the case I'd cut that old shit out, pull the fuses to it and run your own power/relay/fuse/and what not. You only need 3 wires for an aftermarket HU.

Edit: Depending on how bad the wires are damaged you might be able to salvage some of it.

 

It looks like the subwoofer wiring he spliced into the main harness was drawing too much power and melted the entire coating off. It's not even a power cable... someone was an idiot.

I've been doing installs for over 20 years now. I've seen some crazy shit. It still blows my mind one what people come up with.

 

Luckily I brought all my wiring stuff... cables, wireless solder thingy, heat shrinking stuff... Electrical tape

 

One of the best setups, which I just saw recently, was in a 4 Runner. A buddy of mine installed a system into his GF's 4 Runner that has the JBL 10 speaker setup. He replaced all 10 speakers. Got an amp and hooked it all up with a 12 inch sub.

1. The sub is in the stock 8 inch box.. It literally is held in with screws that are 4 inches long and isn't sealed at all. There must be a 3 inch gab between the sub and where it 'should' mount. Magnet is hitting the back of the box and it can't breath. Oh it's also a DVC sub and only one voice coil is hooked up. And it's backwards.
2. He has 1 amp for the entire truck. 1 monoblock 600watt sub amp.... For the entire fucking truck. A sub amp, for a sub, and 10 other mid/high speakers.....
3. He wires the sub, and all 10 speakers into the one amp. All are ran in series in one long run.
4. The gain on his amp is at 100%. The freq is set to 35 with a subsonic filter set to 25hz.
5. The power wire running to his amp, is the same wire that the stock JBL amp used..... 14g wire... 600watt amp.... yeah......

It literally is one of the worst sounding things I've ever heard in my entire life. I'm actually shocked it even works.

 

Solder/heat shrink. Always!

 

I'm checking out a few other things on the truck... there's no cabin air filter... seriously?

 

Who the hell still uses CDs??
