I'm considering buying a bully dog GT tuner kit, I've heard very mixed reviews about it, more so good than bad but im not sure if I wanna buy a 450 dollar tuner if it doesn't even work. I just want a little hp and mpg boost, I figure if I get even 2 more mpg per tank, it would pay for itself in 9 months. But I don't know if it will work. Anyone have knowledge on this chip on second generation tacomas?

you aint getting any better mpg from a tuner.... plain n simple. This aint a diesel truck, toyota squeezed just about all they could out of the 1gr.

Mixed reviews will most likely come from this thread as well.

From what i seen on the the 1st thread about this yrs ago, they had a rep on here promising a bunch of crap. Thats what buyers got.....crap. It was so bad, the rep left his own thread and never came back.

    Thats all thats relevant then....
    That whole "tacoma" part.
Your research and mixed reviews math are irrelevant if you didnt see any reviews on tacomas.

They are here, and the majority are not good

This that and the other thing.
read a thread about some one who talked to a guy who actually helped design the Tacoma back in the day and even he said there isn't really any way to gain real hp. when they designed it they already pushed the boundaries tuning wise. you can spend money on a cold air intake, a tuner and a performance exhaust to make yourself feel better and because their all mighty website says you will gain 10HP but the only real way to gain actual noticeable horse power would be to supercharge it haha performance exhausts are cool and all but unless you replace the headers and put in some high flow cat's or remove them, on a stock engine, all it really does is sound cool lol don't get me wrong, the engine might run better with better air flow in and out but its not going to throw you back in ur seat when u hit the gas lol that's all just my opinion tho.

if u want better gas mileage here's a link

You'd be better off spending your money on a TRD supercharger than any tuner for power. Mpg gains are not going to happen with a Tacoma with a tuner. Watching how you drive will have the biggest effect.

Thank you for the insight guys! And for the record I already use synthetic fluids and have a cold air intake.

Update: got the bdx tuner, running on 91 using premium tune, I was getting 260 miles to a tank (~16mpg) and now last 2 tanks I've got 310 and 312, getting around 18 mpg now! And been driving it harder actually, 30/70 street highway. Seems as If it has a little more power, it feels like it has that kick of a cold morning drive but all the time. Only thing, the powerband at certain rpms is spotty, at 2k doesn't pull that much 3k you feel it in the seat to 4k drops down and 5k it picks up again. Weird, I think it will adjust in time tho. But so far I like it, at the rate I drive, with just 2 mpg gain it will pay for itself in 8 months.

Sounds highly improbable. Placebo effect without pics...how are you calculating mpgs?
A dumb question but I don't see anywhere noted, are you even F/I?

Reset trip, 310 miles to a tank divide by gallons put in. 310/17=18.3mpg and I can definitely tell the difference in power, don't get me wrong it's not a lot faster at all, but it just feels like crisp throttle response more so than it actually accelerating faster, seems to climb rpm quicker too

Its a truck. Stop thinking about tuning, MPGs, and hp.

We all told you you were going to waste your money and now you did. Not only did you buy a tuner that even according to you made the response "spotty" you now are buying premium gas. Doesn't seem worth it to 99.9% of the people on this site, because they have common sense.

Doesn't mean if you aren't happy it was worthless, just a stupid waste of money. Oh and go get it backed up by dyno numbers for "proof."

Didn't get it for the power, it's recommended you run 91 anyways in a 2009+ tacoma. I'm getting way more miles to a tank so it's serving it's purpose
