I fail to see how it's the rest of the trucks fault.

Obviously if the engine fails everything else might as well be ruined. He will need to replace everything down to every cup holder to get it working again.

You do realize this is an inanimate object right? It doesn't have feelings.

I would not piss away money on a truck that was a) highly abused or b) a POS and fell apart prematurely. I'd buy something else.

I'd replace an engine at more around 400-500k miles but not less than 200k.

My comment had nothing to do with feelings. A failed engine has nothing to do with the rest of the parts (non engine related). So why would you throw it out? If the OP aims at buying a truck that costs less than a new engine, then good on him. If he aims at getting the exact same truck, replace the motor. Claiming that the rest of the truck is junk because the engine blew is stupid.

Why would you replace a motor in a truck with 4-500k? The rest would be shot for sure. Other than sentimental value I don't see a good reason. Under 200k the rest of the parts should be usable for a while. To me the answer is clear. Unless you have some hidden knowledge that I don't, then please share.

Except that you are looking at it completely backwards.
The lower the mileage on the truck, the more residual value it will hold **if it were working**.
If it has half a MILLION miles, then there's NO POINT in replacing the engine, because engine or not, its still only worth $5.
If it has "just" 186,000 miles, then WITH NO ENGINE its worth $5, or WITH engine its worth... $10k?

In other words, if it costs even a CRAZY high amount like $8000 to put a new engine in it (presuming that it will be worth $10k with an engine), then doing so puts you $2000 ahead of where you'd be by just dumping it.

So OP: Whether you want to KEEP this truck OR NOT, you are still better off FIXING IT.

What I believe he is getting at is, that if the engine failed at 200k, then it was clearly not taken care of. What are the chances that everything else was properly maintained? Is the transmission almost blown, shocks.....

Typically a person maintains everything, or nothing.

    As a example..
I have a big commercial lawn mower that needed a new engine last season. Paid about $1500 for it, and ran all last year great. Last lawn of the year I blew out the transmission on it. That will be another $1500+. I should have taken the $ for a new engine and bought a new mower. Brand new mower costs $5.5k...

What shape is the body in? How is the transmission. If both = good, just get a new engine or rebuild it for sure.

This. OP said he thinks he knew why it happened. It sounded like the issue was how he was treating it.

PackCon I get what he's saying. I still don't agree. If it is the same as your mower example, I'd understand replacing the truck.

However, I do not know the condition of the truck, or why it failed. All I can assume is that the rest if the truck is usable, so throwing it out would be a costly choice.

I have hard time believing the OP mistreated his truck. He is considering replacing the engine, and cares about it enough to register on here and post the question. If he mistreated it to the degree of failure, he probably would have replaced it with a new vehicle to neglect instead of searching for a new engine.

OP, how has the truck been treated while you owned it? Are you the original owner? Mods? I guess we all need to know everything about the value of the truck in its current state (not running) in order to figure what's more cost effective.

I was climbing a really snowy hill and got into it too hard, it popped towards the top and I knew it was done at that point.

Take the $5K you were going to use for an engine swap and use it as a down payment on a newer truck. Cmon man, its already 9 years old. How much longer until you have to replace suspension, transmission and other drive line parts? Its time to retire this one.

Theres a lot more cost to replacing your engine than just the motor. Hoses, belts, fluids, all the other 'while Im in here' parts. Most junkyard motors dont come with a warranty, and even if they do, do you want to go through this AGAIN if it fails?

Sorry brother, but sometimes things just get expensive. This is one of those times.

I know the singular failure of our motors. It was the cause of mine and of many others. The stock in tank fuel pump is garbage. At around 60k its filter is clogged. I put in an aftermarket drop kit into mine from URD. It has an inline napa filter that I replace. My short and long trim fuel levels got better instantly. It idles like brand new. My spark plugs are all EVEN burning now. AND my truck starts up on its first quick crank every morning no problems. The filter in the oem setup looked like it was filled with coal at 90k miles. When i cut up the filter open there was small bits of metal ( lol, probally from when the ring blew). At 30k miles I replace the napa filter because that's when it starts slowing down flow. AT 30K !!!!....

Think about it.. why did the 1st gen tacoma motors last forever ? - Replaceable fuel filters.
