I didn't buy the warranty either, they tried like crazy to pressure me into it. They try and tell you they will keep your monthly payment the same by getting you a better interest rate, IF, you say yes to the warranty.
They then act like you're "crazy" for not taking the "free" extended warranty.

Turns out they will give you the better rate either way. Just a BS tactic they use, so be prepared for it.

Wait until you're a couple months from going out of your original 3/36 warranty and then decide if you think it's worth it.

Lots more people think they'll keep the vehicle forever when sitting at the dealership buying it than ever really follow through and don't trade it for something else in four or five years. Wait 'til you've had the vehicle 2+ years and then decide if it makes sense.

Shop around, there are threads here with names/dealers what will offer a good deal on a factory warranty.

Also be sure to fully understand the different original warranties. 3/36, 5/60 powertrain, 8/80 emissions, and what's already covered under those.

I bought the 8 year/125k warranty for $1200. I plan to drive this truck for at least a decade, just like I did with my 2004 DCSB TRDOR (13 years and 270k miles). I've also found it makes working with the dealer easier when issues do come up. Recently my dealer even took care of some tire damage that wasn't covered by the warranty while I was paying to get an oil change at 1800 miles (saving Toyota care changes for 10k etc...). With all the folks with issues on their 3rd gen, I figured it was cheap insurance and a little more leverage on the dealer to make things right if I have issues, which luckily I haven't in 2500 miles.

To some folks that do all their own maintenance or that don't plan to own it for a decade+ the warranty is definitely not worth it. I personally am busy with young kids, a job, hobbies (skiing, biking, hiking, etc...) so I'd rather spend my free time doing that stuff vs. doing truck repairs. When it comes to mods I'm happy to do the fun work, but repairs I'll leave to the dealer so I have records for later when I sell it with 200k miles like my 04. Due to having all the maintenance records I got $7000 for a truck with 270k because the buyer knew it was well maintained and solid.

I've personally had good luck with the warranties and always broke even or better. On my wife's Subaru we came out way ahead of the $500 extended warranty cost. They had to replace the oil pump at 80,000 miles (out of base warranty) which is in with the timing belt, and while they were there they replaced the timing belt as well because it was covered in oil. Along with a couple AC repairs, roof rack replacement, etc...

    YMMV...

Bought mine 3rd party through Mercury Insuance. Covers all mechanical/ electrical for 7 yrs 100k miles @ $700 w/ $0 deductible. It's their premium package. I go through Mercury every time I purchase a new car. I'm keeping this truck long term so I ponied up and bought it.

One of the benefits of buying a certified used 7year/100k power train warranty.

I bought new from a dealer that includes a lifetime power-train warranty on every new vehicle. So there. :D

Anyone who purchases an extended warranty from the dealer and regrets it can cancel it at any time and receive a pro-rated refund. All you have to do is go to the dealer you purchased from, they verify the mileage and fill out a form to process your refund.

I got extended warranties on my previous two cars (Lexus CT200h and FRS), and got a refund on both when I traded them in. I didn't opt to go with an extended warranty on my 2017 Tacoma because the dealer gives a lifetime powertrain warranty with all new car purchases (obviously contingent on owner performing all recommended scheduled maintenance, which does not have to be done at a dealership).

I called and cancelled the warranty the day after we bought her car and got a full refund. They even sent the refund to the finance company. Which is what I was going to do with it:D:thumbsup:

I'm usually not the type to get extended warranties but the finance manager was a relative of a friend and gave me a price I couldn't turn down. It's only a few bucks a month on top of my payment, so I'm covered for the next 7yrs/100k

From when were the refunds prorated; expiration of the 3/36 or the purchase date?

I bought my 2016 because my 2003 and 2007 both went well over 100,000 without anything more than brakes, oil and rubber.

When a vehicle goes to a dealer because it's broken, the issue is logged into the Toyota data base. They know exactly what breaks on these trucks and when. The reason they sell extended warranties is that they know they make money off of them.

Ask five people from five years ago what they got for their extended warranty. They don't pencil out unless you're a dealer.

Extended warranties are in general a huge profit center for the dealer, but if you are one of the unlucky few that runs into an issue down the line they pay for themselves. I got the Platinum warranty, 8 years for $1100 and if not used I get a check back from Toyota for the full cost. First time I bought an extended warranty for a vehicle, probably wont use it.

Bought the extended warranty for $500, 7yr 100k. Wanted the piece of mind because the tundra that I traded in was a nightmare after 3rd year of warranty ended.
