Go full retard and just put some micropiles in. I'm sure there are a few around here who could design them:anonymous:

In all seriousness you can just cut the slab and excavate/ pour a thicker slab at the base. It looks like when the did my house originally they didn't measure correctly for the columns in the garage and had to do just that after the fact

No, not at all. It's pretty cool up there but take the cog railway instead.

I use the 4post at my shop all the time - I'm wary of using a 2-post to lift the truck since I haven't done it yet

Is there some type of rating for the compaction when dealing with industrial construction and what constitutes it?

I'm thinking about the SCS Ray 10 wheels for my truck. Would you guys go gunmetal or gray on a Blue Ribbon Metallic truck?

I like those Ray10 wheels. I'll only upgrade my wheels when I can find some with the smallest/fewest holes possible. I'd rather have a solid plate in there.

Sorry for jumping in and replying, but large sites use a Nuclear Density Gauge and are able to determine the percentage of compaction. A lot of sites require a material compaction of at least 95%, and they bring in the big guns to test it out.

The trained guys come in with a fun looking box, smack a probe into the ground, and blast it with gamma rays to measure how many particles are emitted and how many come back.

Wow that's pretty cool. Why would you need to go to that extent?

Yes, for commercial construction there are typically specifications telling you what kind of compaction you need for drive lanes, walk ways and even landscape areas. They are also usually tested by a 3rd part testing company and documented.
It's actually not nearly as bad as it sounds. I used to be certified to do that testing and carry one of those gauges. It's a quick and simple test and takes all of about 15-20 seconds per test. It's cheap insurance when you think about what would happen if you don't properly compact fill material and you get differential settlement. Virgin earth is also generally proof rolled with some heavy equipment or a loaded dump truck and/or probed to prove that the it is suitable to build on. Additionally, a 3rd part inspection company will inspect the subgrades to make sure organic materials have all been removed so again, it doesn't rot and cause the building or road to settle. All of that pretty much goes out the window with residential construction. Granted, houses are a lot lighter than a steel framed commercial building, but the quality control is also generally much more relaxed as well. That's not a dig at residential contractors by any means, there are some really great builders out there who will do the right thing, they are just governed by a different set of rules than commercial construction.

Did you have the badge you would have to send in annually for radiation testing? Can't seem to remember if thats mandatory or not.

I used to be nuke certified back in the day. No more lugging that fucking heavy ass probe around/ banging in the pilot rod/ banging out proctor tests by hand for this guy.

Like Mike said, quick easy test. Any monkey can run it, higher functioning monkeys can even work within the machines tolerances to "game" the results positive or negative depending on how much of a douche the contractor is being...

Yes you have a rad badge you wear when using it and send it back to get tested annually.

I think the point is residential construction code for subgrade compaction is shitty at best. Which is not good if you're looking to support a relatively concentrated load on a thin slab.

Looks like I might be joining the F-150 club here... found a '17 3.5 Ecoboost XLT and a buyer for my Taco.

I'm hoping I don't regret all this... I've driven nothing but Tacomas since 2003.

@jethro You tow frequently correct? In reality a 1500 size truck is much better for that than a taco. I looked real hard at tundras when I sold my taco, almost pulled the trigger on one. But at the end of the day the heaviest thing I tow is my 13' aluminum boat, maybe a 4x8 trailer to haul shit around. And the bed in my 92 Toyota pickup has served just fine for any diy crap I need.
