I tow snowmobiles thousands of miles every winter, but even my heavy trailer is 2700 lbs. The Taco handles it just fine. I looked at the Tundras but they are easily 10k more than a comparable F-150.

I like mine. It's the 2.7 instead of the 3.5, but it still has a lot more get-up-and-go than my 4.0 Tacoma ever did, even though it's lugging a bigger, heavier truck around. Tows better, too. Much more stable. And a whole host of power options, accessories, etc. that the Tacoma didn't have. And I spent a few thousand dollars less than I would have if I'd optioned out a comparably equipped 3rd gen.

For offroading it's less capable, just because of clearance issues and overall size. But I honestly don't do hardly any offroading any more. 99% of my driving is on the road now, and this truck is much more comfortable, quiet, & powerful, so it's all-around better suited for that.

It seems more of my family wants to get into the travel trailer life lol. My uncle had just purchased a 2017 Chevy Silverado V6 to tow. THey just started looking and his mistress apparently wanted a 35ft trailer.......he is going to need more truck for that lmao. I looked up the tow rating on his truck and it is apparently less than that of our Tacos....5500lbs. I was surprised.

Really, I pretty much ruled out the 2.7 because my co-worker has one and I can't seem to accept the fact that it's such a tiny motor.

I never offroad. Unless the boat or snowmobile launch is down a dirt road or something.

I felt the same way, until I test drove one. I was extremely skeptical, figured it'd be a real dog. But I left laid down a strip of rubber for probably 20 feet by accident when I was pulling out of the dealership, and I started changing my opinion, lol. I really was surprised. It's rated for 325hp & 375Ft/lbs, does 0-60 in under 6 seconds, and is rated to tow 7600lbs, which is plenty for me. :notsure:

And I'm in the same boat as far as offroading, these days. The trip to the family camp that was down a god-awful discontinued logging road was really the only off-roading I did, and since it's no longer in the family I won't need to make that trip again.

Yeah, I had one of those badges although, when I operated a gauge, it was more than once a year.
I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about as far as the results go... You could really make the results vary with pavement, it was nuts.
    Doooeeeiiit!!!
Have you considered the 5.0? I couldn't get my head around the 2.7L eco either. I'm sure it'd be fine for what I do with it, but there's something about the V8. The MPG is very similar when unloaded also.

Yup, it's pretty crazy push the probe all the way down on its stop or pull it up so it's still in the stop just "loose" and you can swing results like +-20%.

Glad I'm not doing logging borings, banging out field proctor's, running nuke tests etc anymore.i like being outside, but that shit sucks. It's much more fun giving the orders and teaching people, not actually having to do it

Supposedly my new shocks and coils are waiting for me at UPS! Woo!

Now which of you fine folk can I bribe with food/beer/cash all of the above to help me install it? Unfortunately apartment living means no garage or tools.

I did not consider the 5.0, I drive a lot of commuting miles. I have a buddy that just bought the new 3.5 EB and he says it's a rocket ship.

I'll be test driving some this week, see what I come up with.

Might be worth at least testing one out. In boost, the EB will actually do worse in the MPG dept than the 5.0 in a lot of cases. If you tow heavy, it sounds like EB is the way to go but I still can't get by a small engine making a lot of power being a recipe for longevity. Has Mr. Shelby taught us nothing? I'm getting 18-19 MPG commuting in and out of Boston and can break 20 on long highway runs. I'd love to see what my truck would do if I stripped 6-700 lbs (which is basically what they did with the aluminum body). I've got the 3.55 rear end so it's decent for MPG and not bad for towing. Since you will be towing, keep an eye on the rear end you get in the truck you test. They have several options, 3.31, 3.55, 3.71 and 4.10 although I think 4.10 is only in the Raptor. I'd stick to 3.55 or 3.73 rear, 3.55 being a good all-rounder in my opinion as long as you aren't towing really heavy.
