You can do them with a smaller home machine but it will take a long time to stitch them out. The bigger one's run a lot faster. Mine run at 1000 SPM. There's a new one put that runs at 1500 SPM but it's way up there cause only one company makes it.

You also have a lot bigger stitching field with the bigger machines. My new one will do 13x17. Current one is 8x12. My smaller one is 5x7.

Really it just depends on how old a machine you're will to go with. I've seen some sell used for as little as $2500 but needed a $1000 part on them. When you get to the bigger machines it costs a lot more for parts. A service on my current one is $300 plus parts if needed and I take it in to the shop, it only weighs 80 lbs. New one has to have a tech come out and you're looking at about $1000 and it weighs 475 lbs. You have to learn to work on them yourself when you go big.

I have two friends with companies that I do all their embroidery. I work mostly by word of mouth. I'm planning on getting in the patch game here soon.

The skull patch above was 20k stitches. It took 38 minutes to stitch it out running at 900 SPM. The machine I did it on (PR655) speeds up and slows down for certain area's of the patch.

You could look into the older Brother PR series. They start at the PR600 and go up to the PR655. Prices are lower on the older machines. Would probably be in the area of $3500 and up. I've seen a couple go for $2500. It's really all in what you're comfortable with. If you don't mind a LCD screen you save money. You want the HD touch screen like the PR650 and 655 have it costs you more.

    I see.

Yeah, my CONSEW is a beast/heavy too.. But not 475:eek:, need to bring it in with a roll back and forklift.
I know what a pain it is when machines get out of timing etc.. That must really suck when an embroider machine gets whacky.. Guess that's why it cost so much to service..

That's still a chunk even for an older one. You'd have to be really pumping out some patches or whatever to ever break even on the machine.

I have a good idea for you when you decide to get into patches, I think it'd be pretty cool and might help sell you some..

That's sweet! I may PM you sometime about getting something on my hat if you want some more business. I was talking about actually sewing the hat itself, but it looks like you just buy the flexfit hats.

Sewing noob here. What would be the best way to sew some velcro to my headliner? Damn 3rd gens liner doesn't do well with sticking velcro patches on there securely, and I need to make sure my new TW patch stays on.

Niiice! Love the Leia lamp lol.

Without really knowing too much about what headliner they put in the 3rd gens, I'm assuming it'd probably be easiest to use some adhesive to bond Velcro to the headliner. You could sew Velcro panels on but that'd involve pulling the headliner out to work on it. Either Velcro has something with an adhesive back that would hopefully work well on a headliner (I've found Velcro adhesive to be really good), or find some fabric specific adhesive to use with sew-on type Velcro.

I was thinking about an adhesive but not knowing much about fabrics and glues I didn't want to try and just stick something up there and have it come apart down the road. I want it to be permanent. Any fabric glues you'd recommend?

I'd be going for your second option, as I'd want to be able to easily move around patches as I get more.

Any other ways to work around this other than making a permanent change to your headliner? I know every one says they will keep their truck forever but making a permanent change like that for a patch seems excessive. What about making covers for the visors that have Velcro for the patches?

I didn't see him on the first page (shocker) so I though with only 16 pages that he might not have seen it yet.

I now realize that he is the reason for 16 pages.

I'm thinking on the headliner question... Ya'll have already covered a couple of key issues tho.. I think there's some solution. Time for the thinking cap:hattip:

Really strong magnets glued to the back of the patches.
