Buying a 3 year old BMW with 25K miles on it still a better financial move than buying a brand new one in 99% of cases. Buying a 120K mile car maybe right for you but I personally don't want a BMW that old. A twin turbo diesel can and will have problems, very expensive problems.

There have been a lot of issues with the Third gen, not so much a statistical anomaly.

Agree on the used BMW notion; my point was that when you buy one CPO, it will cost a few thousand more than from a 3rd party with no warranty. Either way you are paying - nothing is free.

There do seem to be a higher than historical average number of issues with G3 6cyl auto trans. That's to be expected with releasing a brand new model. I would expect all of these issued to be covered by the original warranty, and with most of the worst cases it seems Toyota is coughing up an extended warranty on their own as a "goodwill" gesture.

Another good rule of thumb is to avoid the first couple of years of any new model vehicle like the plague.

Good thing about the older ones is less electronics, 1 damn module on a new one probably costs as much as a warranty. Nice truck BTW.

Thanks, the new Tacoma is packed with electronic stuff, so much stuff that if something goes wrong or fails you will be in BIG trouble, the CPU is probably 2 grand and has to be programmed if it fails or more It won't be a mechanical problem so much as an electrical that you can't fix, my brother just sold his 2007 Tacoma , traded it in , has 70,000 miles. Had to sell it because after 4000.00 worth of repairs to the embolizer system failing and replacing every part in the embolizer system including the trucks main computer,
it still would start sometimes and then sometimes not, had to wait a day or 2 sometimes and then it started again, only if it wanted to and left him stranded 4 times, once in the middle of no where 1000 miles away and had to fly home.
Toyota corporate sent in a top repair guy to try and fix the problem, no luck and tried a 2nd Toyota dealer, no luck. He ended having to trade it in for a new Tacoma,
SO I THINK YOU BETTER get the warranty because of the electronic this truck has.

No, and never have or will. If the vehicle I am buying has a bad enough reputation (enter name of any German auto mfg) then I have no business buying it.

No issues with my 13 year old Honda, 7 year old Acura, or 1 year old toyota.

As some one who works in the industry, you see how bad we get screwed on this stuff. As one in. The industry you know what you can truly get this stuff for. As some one in the industry you should know how to beat the system.

No, its directly comparable because the cost of the warranty is directly proportional to the risk of the vehicle breaking down. I just said anyone who pays $4k for an 8yr warranty on a Tacoma would be stupid in my opinion, but I myself paid that exact same amount for only 4yrs of coverage on a BMW, and I consider myself smart for doing so. Its proportional and a "good deal" on a warranty entirely depends on the vehicle you're purchasing it for.

    I'll bite.

If you pay $1,500 for an 8yr warranty on a 4x4 tacoma there is VERY little profit margin. If you pay $4k for the same warranty there is a lot more profit margin :)

So if I offered you an 8yr/125k platinum Toyota warranty for $200 you'd "just say no"?? That would be absolutely IDIOTIC and letting your pride get in the way of a smart financial move.

Again everyone has their own decision in regards to VALUE but I think EVERYONE can agree if a platinum warranty was $1 its totally worth it. I be even you'd agree at $200 its totally worth it. Probably even at $400... But we all agree at $4k its a total ripoff. So somewhere in between $1 and $4k there is a reasonable and SMART price to pay, even for a jack like you :p

I passed on the warranty, within a few months I got a letter in the mail from Toyota asking me to buy a plan for quite a bit less than what the dealer wanted. Unless somethings changed you can buy an extended warranty as long as you are still under the 3/36 portion of your manufacturers warranty.

This is correct. Only difference is then you have to pay out of pocket. But if you're leasing and towards the end of the lease you know you're going to buy it you can still purchase a warranty at new car rates as long as the new car warranty hasn't expired (3yr/36k)

Do you not get the 5 year 60,000 mile power train warranty in your area?

See how the first 30K miles go and see if you want it. You can buy it up until the factory warranty runs out.

    That's what I did with my 4Runner.

Definitely lots more electronics and they are expensive to repair or replace and getting stranded is never fun. If your brother had purchased 7 year plus warranty for less than $4000, he would have been a winner. It is definitely a risk/reward play. He must not have been too unhappy since he traded for another Tacoma.
