09 doesn't coast when foot off gas

I have a 09 v6 automatic that appears to almost brake when I remove my foot from the gas when approaching a light or stop sign. I have to shift to neutral every time.

Any ideas?

 

I'm pretty sure it's normal. Its Toyotas version of engine braking. You have to get used to it unfortunatly.

The surge at idle comes in handy when you're manuevering in tight spots or parking. You never have to touch the gas.

 

That is why the millage sucks so bad with the Tacoma - Toyota has a active engine brake for your safety . That is why the Tacoma was not in the acceleration surge recall

 

I easily get 18 mpg mixed driving. I don't think that sucks for mpg for a mid size truck. Or should I say no other mid size trucks bests those numbers.

 

That is why the milage is good with the Tacoma. Your engine is using the momentum of the truck to keep the RPM up not gas. It also saves your brakes a little.

 

Injectors cut out when coasting which is why it feels like the brakes got put on. It *really* helps out on mileage if you can work it in to your normal driving habits.

 

This is one of the features that allowed me to get the long bed (automatic only). I always owned manual transmissions but decided to test drive the long bed just to see how it felt...I could never stand how automatics free-wheeled like a caffeinated banshee causing you to ride the brakes all the time. I consider the engine braking a huge positive of the truck.

 

I dig the engine braking features of this truck and don't understand why people think of it as a ' problem ' , guess they like replacing their brakes more than I do ,

I personally like the engine braking! Sounds mean with headers too!

 

I remember something similar on my 99. I prefer it. When I drive a car and take my foot off the gas I end up braking more than when I drive the taco.

 

I was wondering if the engine braking applies to all tacomas or just with towing package. I can see how the engine braking will come in handy if you are towing a boat.

Silly question but my truck stopped with engine breakign after the TSB for rear springs got done. I did not bother getting fixed as I wanted truck to roll but on some steep declines would be nice to have it. Any idea whats involved in engine breaking and how the rear spring TSB affects it ?

 

I am not an expert by any means, but I am sure it is highly dependent on the torque converter design.

 

I meant sensors. I am wondering if there is load proportioning valve i n that truck and thats what got screwed up in TSB since rear is much higher then before. I used to be able to tap the brakes on long the descent to kick the engine breaking on but now does not seem to be doing it.
