Check your heart and your motives more than the obstacles. If you love sound mixing and you believe LA is where you will become the best you can be at your job I think your decision is set. When is up to you. If your wanting to go to be famous so you can retire into a life you have now I think you will find disappointment. Some paths in life are easier than others but that doesn't make them the right decision for you. Only you can answer that.

I figure with 20 15" 2 way's, 10 18" subs and 32 channel mixer I could handle any gig in the state. The equipment investment really isn't that bad, it's finding competent day-rate labor that's scary. And QSC? I've been using Behringer for the past 9 years, it's been bulletproof and only high end sound engineers such as yourself can hear the difference

 

You garage needs restructuring so you can have one huge door and one small door. Maybe raise the door height too.

 

I have a commercial/multi/instrument, currently fly a king air 200. I screwed myself by not taking the ATP written before the 2014 deadline and since I don't need it to fly the KA I haven't bothered with it this far. I've used ASA test prep materials for every rating I've got.

 

Lol i have no intention of become famous...do you know of any "famous" people..at all that are sound guys?? haha

I do want a good career and hope to be able to work remotely. Plenty in my field do this. which i am confident i can make happen.

Just hard to leave the mountains..done it once already. I know what im in for and just not totally looking forward to the transition. But i think it'll work out in the long run.

two ways? Dude..if you're going that big..get some damn Line arrays haha QSC k10s/K12s are awesome, sound great for what they are. Ive done a few shows on the x32 rack and console. Its a nice little unit really when you think of how cheap it is and what you get.

Not my favorite...but it does a good job and is good for small/medium used venues or touring. Gets the job done.

 

My dig was aimed at the fact that Behringer is even cheaper ;for the best reverse engineering money can buy.

If I was going to start competing for the 250k jobs, I would spring for JBL.

 

I know of no famous sound guys lol. Maybe muscle shoals or whatever, but with that I know nothing about your industry. I'm simply saying you can do good work wherever you are. You should nail down the reasons of what you are striving towards and the decision will become clearer.

Yea well muscle shoals is a place! so not even a person. Funny though as usually studios themselves become more famous than the engineers..ha

Steering rack...SUCKS. It is a bitch to get lined back up. You'll want a long drift that is beefy to help with that.

On that note, i would go OEM for a rack. Not a lot of folks have had great things to say about any aftermarket rack...which sucks because that means its 500 bucks.

Be more difficult i think than a CV swap just because it sucks. But it's pretty straight forward. priming and pressurizing it isn't hard. Just time consuming like brakes. But its hydralic so generally just does it itself.

Edit: I guess his name was Rick Hall and the group was called Muscle Shoals. Side note I've heard of this guy named Rick Hall, he's pretty famous lol

 

Haha no muscel shoals was the studio. The musicians were knows as The Swampers. They eventually broke away from muscle shoals and a couple started Famed studios across the town or something. Both turned out hit after hit.

Rick was the owner of muscle shoals.

 

My muscle shoals association is that it's where Lynyrd Skynyrd and Allman Brothers recorded, correct?

The whole rack in the three mounts. Its a bitch. Done it 5 times now I think..maybe more. Every time sucks. Just takes more effort then you'd want.

You'll need a new alignment no matter what. Paint pen won't be helpful since the tie rods thread into each other. You can try counting the turns. But really, I'd just get it algined. If you did your coilovers and rack at the same time you'd be golden and setup to get one anyways.

You'll need a couple a really big wrenches and a pipe wrench to get the inner tie rods off.

 

Nice. I like that. Yeah, getting your ATP got a lot more complicated after August 1, 2014.

Unless, you really want to do this job more than once, it only makes sense to install a OEM rack. If you don't want to or can't afford a new one, I have read that CVJ is doing OEM remans. Might be worth checking out.

IIRC, the inner requires either a 27 or a 28mm box end.

Also ben it is possible you won't have to remove the outers. If you can get just the inners off your alignment will hold..mostly.
