I buy 5w30 partial/full synthetic of whatever is cheapest at Walmart at the time. I used to only use Valvoline (because my dad only used Valvoline) UNTIL:

I once had the opportunity to visit a company who created motor oil since I was selling the company some science software. They gave me a tour of the facility. They had eight or so engine bays with various engines to perform testing. Burned some ungodly amount of fuel each year. A giant shop for rebuliding/tearing apart the engines. It was a gear head's fantasy. Honestly, the best business trip I have ever taken.

The funny thing is, the same oil produced there went into several different oil labels. Most had the same characteristics.

The scientist man whose main job was analyzing used testing oil said that the only thing made a big difference in oil breakdown was synthetic over regular and almost any synthetic oil performed about the same. He was hesitant to tell me all the brands that the oil produced there went into, but I asked specifically about the Walmart synthetic brand. He repeated, all brands of synthetic are pretty much the same. If it says on the label that it performed to some standard, the oil had to have performed to that standard.

There might be better additives that go into other oils - and the marketing of oil products claims they are all different - but I doubt these make a difference in the first gen taco engine oil.

Castrol High Mileage 10-30 with Fram filter. Thought of going to synthetic blend or full synthetic, but why? Conventional has been working this long without any issues. Over 270K miles.

Depends on which filter you get. Not all fram filters are garbage. A lot. But not all

Why by a 10$ fram when you can get a WIX/ Napa gold or OEM for less and is still better than a fram?

Well I'm a newbie here. Just picked up a 1st gen. in Dec. Just ordered a case of toyota D3 filters, just seeing which oil I should run. Seems like everyone has a favorite. I'll probably go with Mobil 1. How many times do any of you folks change the fuel filter?

That's irrelevant to what you originally said about them being the worst made. Not all of them are the worst made. Some Fram filters are actually quite good.

Never have seen a fram built well, they use thin cases, card board ends and the anti drain back valve sucks. Many cases of them not working. Same if true with the bypass. They are not well put together period. My friend ran the "tough guard" and had the freaking gasket blow on the filter after 100 miles! Not sure how anyone can stand behind a product that does this to more than 1 person over and over. If you choose to put garbage on your truck be my guest

Fram ultra synthetic filter is one of the best filters made. It's a newer line of theirs, so you might not have heard of it yet. It is very high quality. Might be time to get up to date on the latest and greatest in oil and filter world? I'm not gonna search for a link, but there's plenty of info and testing out there on it, if you care to look into it.

I actually have looked into this filter. While it is a better filter than some others on the market, the can thickness is the same as every other fram at .015" thick. It uses the same anti drain back as the tough guard (silicone, not bad). The filter is identical other than the metal end caps with both the tough guard and ultra being a Synthetic media. They all use a leaf style spring and a plastic "plug or popit" in the center for the bypass. So all in all it is the same as the tough guard but includes metal end caps on the filter media.

Like I said, I've never had an issue with using a Fram filter. Does this mean I won't use another filter? No. It's just what I've been using for a long time on my truck. And it's been working.

My family has a 1999 with the 3.4 V6, and we use the top end Fram oil filter with Castrol 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil. This rig has 166,xxx plus miles on it, and doesn't burn any oil. We change the oil and filter on our Tacoma every 6,000 miles. The transmission, differentials, and transfer case get AMSOIL full synthetic when we change oil on these parts, which I think is every four years.

I am using an STP Extended Life oil filter and Mobile 1 Synthetic 5-30 for High Mileage vehicles. I changed it every 3k miles until the most recent when I bumped it to 4k intervals. I'm going to sit at 4k intervals I think. Truck is a 1999 V-6 with 202,500 miles on it. Running strong. Also just switched to premium fuel. Damn! It likes premium fuel. Perky as all get out. Thanks to all the posters on this thread. I feel confident in my approach to oil after reading everything!

I just switched the original conventional oil with full synthetic Mobil-1 5W30 with a genuine Toyota YZZD3 oil filter. The original owner ran the cheapest conventional oil that the oil change place offered, so I sent a vial of it to get tested by Blackstone Laboratories when I made the switch since I was concerned. And damn these motors are solid, even though the 3RZ was using the cheapest conventional oil the results were above average good. Good filtration, flow, and viscosity.

Truck has about 80k miles, there's 6,000 miles on the conventional oil before I changed it. It's an Inline 4 2.7l 3RZ-FE 2x4 PreRunner California truck.

If you haven't tested your oil I highly recommend it. It may show damage or wear that you can't exactly see with your eyes.
