mossberg 535 ATS

I am still looking at my first shotgun and asked TW a bit ago which are good. It was pretty much split between the remington 870 and the mossberg 500. Im looking at the mossberg 535 ATS and wanted to see if anyone had any praises, gripes, or anything else to add about this gun.

 

There was recently a thread on this. People were pretty much split. A ton of aftermarket parts for both. Both will run forever if you take care of them. Comes done to preference and fit. Go to the gun store, close your eyes, comfortably shoulder the gun, and re-open your eyes. Do the same thing with the other. When you re-open your eyes, whichever gun you are lined up better looking down the barrel is your best pick.

I have not owned that model but I can tell you 2 things. It's a Mossberg and it's a pump. It will be good to you.

Btw, Mossberg has excellent customer service, which to me is pretty important. I have an ancient 835 and the elevator assembly broke while I was hunting once. I called to order another one and they just sent it to me for free.

 

You really can't go wrong with either but for me I prefer the Mossberg for few reasons.

1) It has dual extractors (probably should not be a deciding factor but my 500 has never FTE while totally caked up with powder res).

2) The shell carrier is in the up position with the action closed which makes reloading super fast and easy.

3) I prefer the thumb tang safety of the 500 vs. the finger push on the trigger guard of the 870.

Mossberg has an aluminum receiver vs. 870s steel but unless you're running it over with your truck that shouldn't matter. So think about the features that you prefer and then go handle both. See which one feels most natural to hold and shoot.

 

thats awsome. customer service is huge for me as well. I thought this gun was pretty nice but again this is my first gun so i really have no idea.

 

Mossberg and Remington shotguns are both great for the $. For some it just comes down to safety position like stated earlier. Fiddle a few models and get the one you like.

 

I have both the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500. I like the Remington 870 better because it has a bigger magazine out of the box. The Mossberg 500 has a thumb safety which is a nice feature. Both are great guns so you can't go wrong either way.

Have numerous Wiingmaster 870's as well as a couple of Special Field 870 models. Love the Wingmaster. Quality is number one. The Special Field version though is definitely of lesser quality. Fit and finish just don't match but this is also evident in the price.
As to the Mossberg, had an older model 500. Nothing but problems. But that was years ago. I also own a Mossberg Silver Reserve 12 and 20 gauge overunder set. Nice gun for entry level upland bird gun.
Back to the 870. If you can find a good deal it's a quality gun and worth owning. Just my thoughts. ken

 

I cant decide! I get my paycheck friday and am really anxious to grab one of these bad boys. im totaly split. Ok maybe this is a better way to go about it. I have a budget of about $400 for the gun, maybe you guys can give me suggestions on which trim to go with??

 

Have you even looked at these guns? There is no comparison between the two. The 870 is definitely the way to go. Mossbergs are garbage. No brainer dude.

 

This was taken from a test exerpt of both guns. Both are in use in the military. Both have pluses and minuses. If shooting 3000 rounds through your gun in a short time frame, then freezing, baking and dropping your gun is foremost in your mind- absloutely buy and modify your mossberg to miltary specs.. Ken

Note: The U.S. military's adoption of shotguns is a tad confusing and not as clear cut as with it's rifles. They appear to buy whatever they want, whenever they want. I am not aware of any specific order adopting the Remington 870 (I could definitely be wrong about this!), unlike the Mossberg 500 which has officially been adopted as a U.S. small arm. However, it is certain that Remington 870s are indeed in wide-spread use in the military, and have been since the Marine Corps began purchasing them for the Vietnam War. Despite the possible lack of official adoption, it is probable that the U.S. government has simply purchased the Remington 870 as needed.
It should also be noted that both the Remington 870 and the Mossberg have officially been replaced by the Benelli M1014, known as the M4 Super 90 on the civilian market. Interestingly, the Mossberg is still the only shotgun to meet Mil-Spec 3443E. Also, the government continues to purchase both 870s and 500s despite the adoption of the Benelli.

 

The 535 can handle 3.5 in shells, just like the 835. The 500 cannot. If you plan on shooting 3.5 a lot (primarily turkey or waterfowl) get an 835 combo. If not, go with the 500. The 535 is basically just a stretched version of the 500, while the 835 is overbored to 10 guage specs. This provides a much more consistent pattern with 3.5 in loads. If you are only going to shoot 3.5 from time to time, then the 535 should be sufficient. As far as the 535 vs 870 debate, you are going to find haters on both sides, saying poor things about the other. Its like asking a ford guy his opinion on chevy (while obviously toyotas are far superior)

 

ok so then let me ask you this. which gun is the toyota of the mix?
and I liked the 535 over the 500 because it had more options for ammo sizw

 

I guess it must be the mossberg as the Wingmaster 870 won't see the recalls. hehehehe IMHO. Oh, they did have a barrel recall several years ago when steel got popular so make sure if you buy a used 870 you get one that will accept steel.
