I owed, because I got screwed over and made two (well, really one) mistake. Screwed over because ended up having to pay the insurance penalty despite doing the math at the beginning of the year (and even toward the end) and it all coming back I wouldn't make enough so I'd be exempt. My mistake was the first couple of years after starting my business, I didn't make enough to owe income tax. Last year I did, but I neglected to factor that into my quarterly payments (only paid self-employment). And of course since I wasn't paying the feds any estimated income, I certainly wasn't paying the state anything either.

Could have been worse. Managed to get what I owed down from $2600 to like $1000, so... I prefer breaking even or getting it right, but I definitely don't like getting money back (that I paid or for you employed people withheld). They ain't paying interest on that shit after all.

For the first time I put money away from each paycheck and let them take less each month. I owe but less than what I paid last year minus the refund. I think I'm ahead or at least even despite a change in income.

I acquired my father's 2002 Nissan Frontier 3.3 Supercharged after he passed away. The truck was in Arizona: no emissions requirements. Get it here, and fail emissions three times. Tried a few things, but finally took it to the stealership and was quoted 3200 on the 4 cats/02 sensors that need to be replaced (oh, and a bad belt...glad my mom paid a mechanic to look it over for nothing...another 400 or so). Just called AA Performance Muffler and was quoted 2700 all-in.

However, the person I talked to indicated that these trucks are notorious for having cracked manifolds...a likely additional 600 or 700 (she was very professional and apologetic). I also need a new suspension system to add on to the fun. The truck itself is worth at best 4,000 in good working condition.

Since you guys have always steered me wrong, what should I do at this point? I like the idea of having a DD, but not one that should be largely free and is ending up costing so much.

The saddest thing? Most of the cost is for emissions...but I largely commute using bicycle/public transportation.

Thoughts? Should I sell? Are the quotes I've gotten accurate? Is it common for all 4 cats to be bad? Do I set it on fire and shoot at it?

It's here already. So I can plate it there but still have it registered here? The DMV site makes it seem like I have to have it plated/registered here. I will try the DMV tomorrow to see what options I have.

Plates are where it's registered. If it's still in his name can't your mom go in and get it registered? Then mail you the plates and sticker?
Location of vehicle is irrelevant unless they want a vin verification. But if you talk to the Colorado DMV be careful if you show them the paperwork that it's here they'll probably tell you like they told me with a trailer that it has to be registered and plated within 60days or they'll charge late/back fees

I know people who have been here a decade and still using their out of state parents address as residence and registering vehicles at a lower cost. Doesn't mean your not technically breaking the "law" but too each his own.

I should have done that. My dad lives in a non emission county in AZ, I could register all my vehicles there without ever going to AZ and have the registration with my CO address. You run into more insurance issues with the 2 states than anything else I have found.
