I don't even remember where I got that Nissan. I saw it at a store somewhere for like $15 or $20 and bought it on the spot. Anyway, I know you're joking about the Nissan Titan LOL...

This is not a drunk grandpa story... This is my personal opinion/theory...

I've been reading some rants about 3rd Gens on TW, mainly relating to the 8-speed automatic transmissions and Atkinson-Cycle V6 engines. This goes far beyond Tacomas... Or even Toyotas...

In September 2014, my cousin bought a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned to the layperson) 2013 Honda CR-V AWD with about 41K miles on it. What she paid for the CR-V is not important, but I will tell you that the dealer was obnoxiously hesitant to go below the asking price. This was the first clue. My cousin bought the CR-V and financed it for like 5 years (normal amount of time in my opinion; she got a good interest rate too). The mileage was a bit high for what was at the time a 1-year old vehicle, but it was in good shape and had a clean CARFAX.The dealer where my cousin bought the CR-V is located closer to where my parents and I live, and over an hour from where she lives. She went to this dealer because they had the best deal and one of the better prices (even though they could have gone lower). My cousin had a 2006 Scion xA that had 160K miles and was starting to have typical old age problems, and she needed a new vehicle, so she bought this CR-V after my dad and I gave it our approval.

My cousin's CR-V is a base "LX" model. It's got A/C, cruise, tilt, power windows, and power locks. It's also got a pretty good factory 4-speaker stereo with CD, USB, AUX, and Bluetooth. 2013 was the year Honda made backup cameras standard on ALL models (even the cheapest Civics and Fits), so my cousin's has this feature. My cousin has owned the CR-V for about two and a half years, loves it, and as of March 2017 it now has 105K miles (my cousin drives a lot). It has not had a problem.

Within probably 6 to 8 months of my cousin buying the CR-V, she started getting mail and phone calls from the dealer she bought it from asking her to buy it back at full retail value (which was a decent amount but still less than what she'd paid for it back in September 2014), and put her into another Honda vehicle (which would mean paying off the loan on the 2013 CR-V and starting from scratch with a newer, more expensive vehicle).

The dealer specifically wanted 2013 and older models because for the 2014 model year, Honda had revised the drivetrain. The CR-V is VERY popular among people who need a vehicle to tow behind their motorhomes so they'll have a normal-sized vehicle to drive when they're stopped at a campsite or trailer park. Because of the new drivetrain design (don't know what it is) 2014-newer models cannot simply be shifted into neutral and towed with a towbar behind an RV, because damage to the drivetrain will result and the warranty would be voided, leaving the owner on the hook for thousands of dollars in repairs. In order to be towed, the 2014-newer CRV must be placed on a tow dolly or trailer (which must titled, registered, licensed, and insured; IN ADDITION to the vehicle it is being used to tow. The one exception to the 2014-newer rule would be front-wheel drive models, which can be towed with their rear wheels on the ground. On 2014-newer AWD models, however, none of the wheels can touch the ground. 2013 and older models with AWD are different and can in fact be towed with all four wheels on the ground. None of the snowbird RV owners want to deal with the added expense and overall hassle of a trailer in addition to the motorhome and the vehicle being towed behind it. So, the demand for pre-2014 models is high, and dealers can't keep them in stock.

The dealer where my cousin bought the CR-V from seems to have given up. However, this dealer was over an hour from her house. She took it to a Honda dealer near her for stuff like oil changes and other routine maintenance. She recently moved out of state when her husband got a new job, and she lives several hours away from both Honda dealers. The Honda dealer near her house continues to barrage her with mail and phone calls pressuring her to trade in her 2013 CR-V and buy a new or CPO Honda from them...

The CR-V is in good shape and has no problems (aside from a Bluetooth system that rarely works properly), but it has over 105K miles on it now, and the mileage is steadily rising. I highly doubt it's worth anywhere near what she paid for it, and it's halfway paid off now. In my opinion, no vehicle is better than a vehicle that is paid off. My cousin loves her CR-V and has no intention of getting rid of it anytime soon, but the dealer will not leave her alone. When she takes it to a Honda dealer near her new home for routine maintenance, I bet they'll starting making offers to buy her CR-V as well.

In 2011-2012, my dad started getting letters and phone calls to buy the Tacoma back for full retail value, even if we didn't buy another vehicle from them (actually he was only contacted once or twice). My Tacoma had SUPER LOW miles on it at the time (20K-25K), and retail value was no more than a couple grand below what he'd paid for it new. My dad considered selling the silver 2010 regular cab I still have now, and buying me a low-mileage 2002 access cab SR5 Prerunner his younger brother was selling. It's probably better than my dad opted to keep the 2010, and the dealer quickly gave up.

dealers making buyback offers is a common sales tactic and no, you don't have some special vehicle

they want you in to make them more money or come close to it. if not you, the next person.

they sell cars. it is a numbers game. that is all.

This only happened to my dad once (before he gave me the Tacoma as an early Christmas present last year). It was back in like 2011-2012 when the truck was not paid off yet and had only like 20K-25K miles on it. They sent him a couple things in the mail offering him very close to what he paid for it new, but he decided to keep it... No dealer has offered to buy the Tacoma since...

However, as I've said before on TW, people have approached me offering to buy it. In the summer of 2015, I took a second job as a delivery driver at a pizza place for the reason everybody takes a second job (to make some extra money). I was involved in a very minor fender bender one morning in August 2015, and that afternoon when I showed up for my shift at the pizzeria, my boss (the owner) immediately noticed the minor damage to truck and began aggressively offering to take it off my hands. I think he offered me like $9,000 or $10,000, saying that if he bought the truck he would use it as a work vehicle and not fix the damage. In perfect condition, the resale value of my truck at the time was like $13K. A picture of the minor accident damage is included in another post, and it cost like $1,500 to fix. I finally had to put my foot down politely but firmly tell my boss "No, the truck isn't for sale!" The day after I told off my boss, I took my truck to a body shop for an estimate, and some woman whose Audi had been sideswiped, complimented me on my truck and asked me what I thought it was worth (She had a $50K 6-speed stick Audi A6 and she was interested in my truck!). I've also been asked by TW members to please call them if I ever want to sell it!

By the way, I quit working at that pizza place after this happened. It still isn't for sale, either!

So does anybody with even an older (2005-2008) 2nd gen have any stories to tell about someone (Dealer or otherwise) aggressively trying to buy back their truck?

    My dealership theory

In most cases, yes... But why does the same continually make buyback offers to my cousin for a base model CR-V with 105K miles when she tells them she isn't interested, and after she's moved away?

Dealers seem to like to mail stuff out and call to make offers.

Yep. This is why I ended up buying a new 2017, it was cheaper than a 2015 CPO! I should have looked into why that was, but I think I'm happy with my purchase

340 miles isn't enough to formulate an opinion as of yet. 34000 miles on the other hand...

I have one complaint about base model 1st gen regular cabs. They tend to not have tilt steering columns. At least the ones I've seen haven't... When you're as big a guy as I am, a tilt wheel is pretty important...
