Ha,ha I was given a ford escort because they thought the tranny was blown...went to the junkyard picked up a 20 dollar cv axel...ran it for 5 years...sold it for 3500. Subtract my 20 bucks I did OK.

Or even if they don't make much on your trade, they're trying to make more on the vehicle they sell you..financing..warranty..etc..

my TRD Sport does not have the tilt wheel. Personally I dont need it to, I'm fine with things as they are but it just seems like it should have that feature.

They got the car and sold it to her higher than what they did. They made money. Finance went through them. They made money. Try to buy it back lower than what they sold it to her for. They make money. She gets a new car from the trade in. They make money. Finance. They make money. We call these "sales tactics" this is not uncommon and technology doesn't have anything to do with the buyback because if she traded it. Same thing would happen to the next owner. It doesn't get crushed.

    Normal tactics.

Money to be made, always, and half the suckers that get those cards think they're hitting the lottery.

Probably 100 threads on TW started by guys asking if they should trade in their 2-3 year old truck for a $10k profit and assurance of a great deal on a new truck.

It's all marketing, it gets people spending money they otherwise wouldn't and the dealer makes cash.

By the way, I have a lot of retired military in my family...

My dad was in the Navy from 1982-2007; Joined right out of college and retired as a Captain
My late biological Grandpa was in the Marines from 1955-1959 (forget his rank)
My step-Grandpa was in the Navy during WWII and served in Japan as a Frogman
My uncle was in the Army in the 1970s-1980s as a helicopter pilot (forget his rank)
My other uncle was in the Army from like 1971-1996, saw action in Desert Storm; enrolled at West Point at 18 and retired as a Sergeant Major

One time when the uncle who was a pilot was stationed in South Korea in the early 1980s, he was flying a routine recon mission right on the North Korea border. One of the soldiers riding in the back of the chopper slid open the side door, dropped his fatigues, and mooned the North Korea soldiers on the other side of the DMZ... Damn near started an international incident...

I get offers all the time. Who knows if they are dreamers or not. But one guy 2 Summers ago came up to me while my wife and I were crabbing asking if I'd sell him my truck. I said, thanks, but I like my truck, not for sale. About 2 hours later he comes back with $9,500.00 cash and said here, I have cash now. I said the same thing without hesitation, its not for sale. He said I have more, what's your price? Sorry, Not for sale. He walked away pissed off.

My teacher and her then-husband got a red 2002 Toyota Tacoma double cab 4x4 SR5 3.4L V6 automatic (know it was an SR5, not sure if it was a TRD) for like eight grand ($8,000; At least I think it was that much). This was in like 2006 or 2007. The 2002 double cab belonged to someone they knew who had a decent amount of money, had just gotten a new job and a new company vehicle, and needed to get rid of the Tacoma fast. They bought it outright for eight thousand dollars. Sounds like every Tacoma enthusiast's dream, right...?

WRONG! So they paid thousands of dollars less for this Tacoma than it was actually worth and paid 6% sales tax on the reduced price, as per Pennsylvania law. The tax collectors automatically assumed my teacher and her husband were lying about what they actually paid for the truck. They fought the case and lost, so they had to pay the difference on 6% for the so-called actual value of the Tacoma, which was considerably more than what they paid!

Wow that is a interesting story !!

    Has the law changed ??

That you now pay tax on what someone says the vehicle should be worth ??

Does one now need to get a Certified Inspection carried out by a government agency for every used vehicle purchase ??

It has been a few years and I am quite slow in these matters it might have happened .

Yea, I don't think they go off of the claimed price anymore and use book values in Florida now. Too many people buying 5-10 year old cars for $1000.

I get calls from the dealer all the time asking me to trade in. They quote you a certain price but then I bet that's just to get you in, and if you were to trade in, I bet it'd be much lower.

No, the government was just being an asshole...

My dad gifted me my Tacoma and we were able to circumvent any taxes... Totally legal... Didn't even have to get a new license plate... Only had to pay title fee and related tax!

No, they just ask about the snorkle or the exhaust intake as they put it.

My Dealership just offered me $17,000 for my 2006with 115,000 miles last week ,if I was willing too purchase a new Tacoma.I said no thank you.
The Dealerships are hurting for lack of sales right now due the the crappy economy.

Economy's better than it was when we got my Tacoma back in September 2009...

Sticker was over $17K. After trade and negotiation my dad paid less than $15K for it! My dad thinks the economy back then had something to do with it. Almost 8 years later, my truck is still worth almost $12K!
