Um, explain how a barrel increases energy versus redirecting it. If anything, the friction of the bullet against the barrel will reduce the energy. Amiright?

You're arguing terminology. You're both correct, but using different words to describe the same process.

The barrel allows the high-pressure propellant gases to push on the bullet for a longer period of time. That's why longer barrel equals higher bullet velocity. Of course the pressure decreases as the bullet travels down the barrel, because the space behind the bullet increases, so there is a breakeven point where the barrel friction would exceed gas pressure and cause the bullet to slow down.

That breakeven point is pretty far out so it usually isn't a practical concern. Take for example a common 9x19mm parabellum cartridge. Typical pistol barrel length for it is 4-5". There are AR15-format rifles chambered for this cartridge with 16" barrels, and the bullet still doesn't slow down.

... and in the absence of a barrel / chamber there's little to constrain a near spherical expansion of the combustion gasses. The casing is far more likely to cause injury than the bullet, particularly if it fragments.

There has been far too much reason and logic in this thread. Please refer to the title and return to expectation.

    I mean, really. WTF?

You're saying that the use of reason and logic in an Internet forum isn't a WTF in itself?

Probably a challenge being a biped dog but he's not dead and he's getting to run on a beach on a sunny day. All said, I'd say he's doing pretty good... :)
