If you encounter this, just pull back to neutral and clutch out and in and then try to put it in 1st again and it should go. Or you can keep the clutch in and row down to second and then try back up to 1st and it should work.

If the second method doesn't work, the clutch out and in while in neutral will.

Mine was definitely a bit more catchy when new, now with 77k miles on my 2014 it's smoother. Still not like some of the car MT's I've driven but it's decent enough.

How many people are on their first clutch? Or how many miles did you have when replaced...just a quick poll to see how durable the taco clutches are. This is my first taco (and truck) so not sure if it differs much from the other manuals I've had.

Pretty darn ironic tho when ya boil it down...we got the MT to DRIVE the truck, yet they have an electronic accelerator instead of cable. Allegedly a 'learning algorithm' on your past driving habits. Wife's Rav4 same...I mostly drive it, but after she drives for a spell, it reacts differently when I step on the pedal. Doesn't make sense in a MT tho IMHO...so, I to afford a twist from my aviation experience...better to have more RPM behind ya (altitude below ya) when shit gets serious, so lowest gear is best when things get mysterious.

Ill tell you what, regearing to 4.56 with 295/75/16s made this truck alot more fun. I can roll it in 1st with no throttle again. Haven't dumped it in 1st yet to see if it stalls, but I can let up without to much slip and itll start rolling. 1st to 2nd has smoothed out a bit, although 1st is still to short and 2nd is still to tall. Basically have to take 1st up to about 4k rpms and then let it settle to about 2k before I can let go in 2nd. Everything else feels really good and I got ALOT of power back (just cant use it for 500 miles while the gears break in). Gotta solid mount the power trail, install headers, and get some tuning done and I think I'll be set!

I second the re-gearing with 285s, I went from 4.30 to 4.88 and it rolls in 1st no problem, and the engine feels like it has some torque!! Also I don't shift on freeways to pass people now its 6th all time time after 65+mph

Am I the only one that has a temperamental 3rd gear? I find that it's quite easy to catch it going between 2 and 3. Yesterday I swore it felt like a grind. I guess I"ll have to be even more deliberate when I shift. I also notice if you hit a bump mid-shift you can get a not so awesome feeling from the gearbox.

I don't think there's anything wrong, as I've driven cars with bad synchros, but a sports car gear box it is not.

Yeah my 3rd gear is a little notchy as well. But you said it yourself--- a sports car it is not! I'm still very happy with the way it shifts. Very very similar to my S5 except the longer throws

I too get a little extra bump when I engage third, like the fork is bumping into something. No grinding though and otherwise it's pretty smooth.

My problem is trying to let out the clutch smoothly into 5th and 6th. I feel like I have to have a little more hang time in those gears to avoid a "clunk" in the driveline.

My last MT was a 95 reg cab short bed S-10 with a 4.3 vortec. Granted it's been 12 years, but I don't remember that thing being this "picky."

I definitely feel the notch. The grindy feeling threw me as it was only one shift the other day that threw me. I suppose I can explain away in my mind hitting a bump mid-shift causing issues. I definitely have the 5th and 6th clunk. Still trying to figure out what's up there as none of my other manuals over the years had done that.

My truck keeps the revs up between shifts after I lift off the gas. It's a little annoying but maybe they do that to prevent stalling??

Question for you guys who replaced your stock shifters with aftermarket knobs...

How do you remove the chrome bezel so you can put a grommet there to keep the boot down? It's attached to the leather by something isn't it? I want to upgrade to the FJ Cruiser TRD shift knob and need to figure that out...

    Thanks

It's rev hang, a modern day engine management/emissions thing.

I've found in this truck if you fully release from the gas and then clutch in you can get some nasty rev hang. Either wait a little longer or push the clutch in a little quicker, or my preference, ease off on the gas almost off but do not fully release, until you have pushed the clutch past the biting point. This will also give you a smoother, quicker shift between lower number gears like 1-2.
