Wheel Backspacing and Offset Info

Wow, cool, a reasonable discussion on offset and scrub radius etc. Wish the aftermarket wheel people would have a look. SCS Steath 8 in 16X8 is running -25 offset and like 3.5" BS. Beautiful wheels, but those spec totally suck for the actual application. FN wheels I have seen are similar but not quite as bad. Difficult to find any positive offset wheels other than the TRD Pro/SEMA wheels. Especially in 17" size.

Did I missed any of the discussion about trade offs: the pros and cons of changing your stock rim to aftermarket rim and tire? Such as the effect on the wear and tear of other parts of the wheel, the speed reading, mileage, ride comfort and the like compare to the stock? How about the strain and stress in which may affect other parts like the wheel bearing? Also how about driving habit, can I still Drive fairly fast on turns in canyon roads?

 

Looking to make sure tire size I'm considering will work without rubbing UCA's. I don't mind trimming a mud flap or something if needed.

i have a stock 2014 tacoma trd offroad. from what ive read on google my truck has 7Jx16 ET30 offset. does that mean the the offset is 30mm? and if i want to get bigger wheels do they have to have the same offset? what difference will it make if i get a different offset?

 

Offset is based off centerline of the wheel.
A 7" rim width(inner) is equal to 8" wheel width(outer).
Center of the wheel width is 4"; + 30mm offset is 5.18" of back space.

As your width changes so must your offset to maintain the same backspacing.

With all the knowledge being dropped I can not pass thru without asking if a wheel with these secs will allow me to run up to a 32" tire in the near future with a lift and not rub the uca's. Prob a ome 3" lift or similar. Specs are 17x8 et15 pcd6x139.7 hub 106.1. Was told the offset was 5.13. Any help would be hugly appreciated. Don't want to get stuck with wheels that don't work!

 

Do you mean stock backspace is 5.13?

8" rim width with +15mm offset will have a backspace of 5.09".
You're probably going to want 8" with zero offset for 4.5" backspace if Lucas will be a concern.

3 Common Offset Mistakes

It seems everyone is talking about offset - and I've noticed some things that some people get wrong. Check out the list below to make sure you aren't making these mistakes.

1. Asking for “more offset” as a way of getting the wheel to stick out further. Higher (more) offset moves the wheel under the vehicle. Lower offset (less) pushes the wheel out. If you want more stance what you really want is “less offset”.

2. Assuming a lower offset will always give the wheel a deeper lip. While this is sometimes true, in many cases a manufacturer will use the exact same wheel and just alter the mounting pad thickness to create different offsets. So, the wheel face (and lip depth) doesn’t change. Different offsets, in these cases, are used for fitment - not for adjusting the look of the rim.

3. Thinking all offsets are created equal. Offset is only half of the equation when figuring out how a wheel will sit on a vehicle. The same offset on wheels with different widths will sit differently. For example: a -12mm offset on a 9" wide wheel means something different than a -12mm offset on a 10" wide wheel.

 

Exactly my dilema. I have 2nd gen wheels on my 02 Tacoma. From reading this thread the factory wheels I have on now have a 5.5 Backspacing. And wheels that came on my 02 have a 4.6 backspacing. The tires are 265/70/R17.
I had Fox coilovers installed last week, along with Fox and Deaver (springs) on the back. And now my UCA's are very close to the tires. The installer said if I had stock wheels my UCA's would have more clearance than they do now. They do not rub unless I am airborne.
For me I think the best way to get my tires away from the UCA is to get a wheel with the correct offset. Besides, it is time to get something in black. Searching around the net has been tough. Mainly because I want something without a bunch of bolts running around the rim. Something clean like this: American Racing 17x8- http://www.wheelsforless.com/AR92378060700
They have 0 offset and a 4.5" backspace, which I believe is what I need. The Stealth 6 and F5 are a couple more I really like. But only the F5 comes with a 0 offset. And it is a 16".
So I am open to wheel suggestions. Thoughts anyone?

Why not have your original wheels sandblasted and painted black Just a suggestion!!

 

Original wheels have the wrong offset. After 2005 it changed i believe. Gotta get more clearance between my UCA and tire.

 

No I mean the 02 wheels

Tires are 17" and wheels need to go bye bye.
I think the ones I have now have a 5.5 backspacing. Changing to a 4.5 should get my UCA 1/2" further from my tire.
Unless I read 39 pages and missed everything.

You may want to get some hub centering rings too, because these wheels have 108mm hub bore and are not hub centric.
