Wow, those OEM Audio systems look pretty awesome. And so is their price - if I hadn't already dropped so much money in functional mods, I'd be all over it though. Perhaps wait it out and save some pennies for awhile vs. trying to go on the cheap and be disappointed and no better off.

I have the same thoughts as you, I just need a little more bass.
Interested to see if anyone is running one of those.

I have Rockford Fosgate Punches in the doors. No amp, nothing but changing speakers. Did the fronts first. My stereo guy warned me that often premium speakers translated to less volume than factory, but I went for it. Very big improvement. Plenty loud and very good sound with rich, warm bass. But I like a lot of high end, so the next step was replacing the factory tweeters. Sorry, I honestly don't remember the specs on them, but my guy is mostly a R-F guy, so that's probably what they are. Huge improvement. 50% at least. Night and day. The tweeters allowed the 6x9's to really do their job. Sounds incredible. No need for a sub, I swear. But I usually only like three volumes; Loud, Really Loud, and Abusive. Wasn't really able to make it to Abusive, so changed the rears also. I this case the previous advice was right; They sound a lot better but not any louder than factory. Still, Really Loud should be enough, as hearing damage is cumulative.

    huh? can't hear you :)

Good to know that the R-F speakers with the tweeters and rear speakers without an amp worked out well for you.

I used to have an '06 Rav4 and everyone always asked if I had the JBL system b/c they sounded so awesome with the standard factory setup. Alas, the Taco doesn't compare w/o JBL. But, of course a Rav has a lot more space for the mids/bass to do their work as well.

Stick with what you have for now and save your money until you get enough money to replase the whole system that way you will definitely notice the difference. And you won t regret your move good things like a streio are worth the wait.

I replaced my front speakers with some Pioneer 6x9's (sorry don't have the exact model number handy). The installer said they could use some adapter mounts (extra charge) or rip out the stock speaker from the mount. I said "go for it", not like I'm ever going to want to put the crappy stock speakers back in.
The magnets on the stock speakers are a joke, no bigger than your thumb tip. Better speakers alone WILL improve the sound of the stock head unit.

Have you looked at the OEM Audio+ system? Plug and play, and by far the best upgrade I've made. Depends on how much you want to spend, but I haven't seen anyone on here regret spending the $$.

    - Edit - missed the top post on the page, but still recommend :)

I actually installed one recently, but it was in a 370z. I was impressed in the small car and would do it again, but not sure if good in bigger cabin space. It won't really thump, but fills in lows very well with a component set of speakers. The kenwood version has a cool adjuster dial too, to play with.

Yes I installed the Rockford Fosgate PS-8 under the drivers seat. It works great and wakes the factory entune system up. Easy install and all wiring is included with the purchase.
The Rockford is 150RMS. The two you mentioned above have less wattage.

Talk to Mr. Marv before you do anything. I bought one of his recommended setups and couldn't be happier.

You know, I'm a dope for posting incomplete info. I totally forgot to mention that not only did my guy replace the speakers, he made stiffer custom mounting plates to replace the stock ones in the front. (No cutting. Just the mount inside the door.) I'm sure that, as he said it would, the plate gives the speakers more stability which allows them to push better. And he put in more sound deadening, which I don't think makes them sound better but certainly cuts road noise.

    Sorry.

With the manual transmission I didn't have the option of the JBL. Anyone in the market for a Tacoma I always recommend the JBL, it is SO much better than the base sound system. If you don't get the JBL option, the best aftermarket is truly the OEM Audio+. I have compared the two side by side at the dealership. The OEM Audio plus is better than the JBL for sure, crystal clear highs and deeper bass. Like doggman said, if you don't get the JBL option from the factory, any mods you do will be marginal unless you go full speakers/sub/amp, which makes the plug and play option from OEM Audio Plus an expensive but no regrets solution.

I do not understand Toyotas decision not to offer the JBL with a Manual, they must think you don't like to listen to music if you like to shift gears...

I have the JBL and I don't think it sounds great either. The front door speakers need a high pass filter. Toyota's distributed subwoofer tech ruins mid-bass.

You installed one? Is it possible to install two? Would that be recommended or not necessary?

I only installed one under the drivers seat. You could install two if you wanted but its not needed unless you were upgrading the rest of the system.
One has plenty of power to blend nicely with the factory setup. It has a lot of adjustably and a remote volume knob to get exactly the sound you want. Its a perfect inexpensive upgrade to my ears. Highly recommend.
To give you an idea of the power on bass heavy music it will make the rearview and sideview mirrors vibrate a little. Basically it allows you to turn up the treble on your factory speakers and move the bass duty over to the sub. This gets rid of the distortion in the factory speakers from doing the full range versus just the highs.
Kicker also makes highly rated under the seat powered sub. I've never compared the two though and its more expensive.
