This I know, I can push the pedal to the floor doing 75-80 and it downshifts and accelerates quickly for a truck with 33s" and stock gears. In ECT, I don't even think about the need to regear except that 6th is not used much anymore. If I go to 35s" I will regear.

I think that part of it is that it's subjective. Some people may feel it's bogged down, others may not.

I can tell you that it feels bogged down without ECT enabled. Once enabled, it drives nearly identical to my 4runner. I'm not sure why people can't just come to terms with the transmission being in ECO mode unless ECT is enabled.

Also, if enabling ECT mode rectifies the issue, it's not mechanical, but software.

The OP is spot on. Even 2 local service departments confirm this. Even the techs are telling me that Toyota engineering screwed this up. So stop trying to justify the crappy performance.

Like it or not, Toyota has a problem here. And if this is the new Toyota then I'm out.

The other Toyota products with the 3.5L don't do this.

Go drive ANY other v6 on the market and none of them feel like this.

    F seat belt Mike!

Yes, I'm an engineer with comprehensive experience.

I hate to say this but the Japanese are just better engineers and assemblers of automobiles.

You don't have to belittle a person because he may not have explained his incident clearly. He's just frustrated like some of us.

This past weekend, I drove from North of Phila. to Washington DC - 2 1/2->3 hours on Interstate 95. I'm not a hot rod anymore, I just set the cruise at 65 MPH. At one point I came behind an older person doing 50->55. I looked in the sideview an saw a car on the left 50->75 yards behind. I pressed down and pulled out. The motor bogged down for a couple of seconds then it downshifted too low. The motor revved very high and did not shift up(completely opposite of what happens at slower speeds). I see the other vehicle now very close. Fortunately I made no forward progress and was able to drop back behind the slower vehicle again. When that happened, I picked up burning smell. I could not pass a vehicle going 50->55 MPH. Was I expecting too much ? And; Is a burning smell normal ?

Pop-n-lock tailgate. New radio knobs. Rear step.
The teething pains with this 3.5L and AT in the Tacoma are inexplicable given the fact that Toyota has done this all very well before in numerous other vehicles. It seems the Tacoma team came up short on their internal MPG numbers (vs expected for the 3.5L) and decided to save face and boost MPG a bit by early shifting and sacrificing driveability. Owners have work-arounds (ECT and shift yourself) but at the end of the day, Toyota just plain screwed up. They can't really rectify it without losing MPG.

I had a 2nd gen and been around here a while. I was an early 3rd gen purchaser too. Don't let my 100 some posts fool you, I deleted thousands when I decided to head to court over some issues I'm not allowed to speak on...
When 3rd gen first came out I was pitching a bitch about stuff I found and got a lot of flak and most thought I was making shit up. I've gotten rid of my 3rd gen but it's amazing to see the sheer numbers and amount of owners with complaints now. It's interesting to watch the evolution of the 3rd gen forum over time.
