The crankshaft seal is around the crankshaft, which is exposed at the bottom of this picture. To get to the camshaft seals you have to remove the camshaft sprockets, the two big gears in the middle of the picture. By the service manual, in order to do that, you actually have to remove the valve covers and put a wrench on some flats on the camshafts themselves. That seemed like way too much work to me, especially since I had just replaced my valve cover gaskets a couple of months before.

You realize that in order to change the timing belt and water pump out you have to drain all that coolant out again?

That was pretty much what I thought. Mechanic Mark looked at it from a creative point of view and saw that there were a couple of bolts behind the sprockets that hold that shield piece on, and I was thinking that I could probably wedge a socket on those and use it to hold the sprocket in place while I wrenched off the bolt in the middle. Then Practical Mark smacked me on the back of the head and said, "IT ISN'T BROKE! DON'T FIX IT!"

Yeah, wont be a problem though. I tried to line up the timing belt earlier but this thing really really needed new coolant and a flush. Couldn't tell if the fluid was red and old or green and old or someone mixed colors. All turned out well though.

Timing belt isn't that hard. I did mine three months after just having taken up auto maintenance for the first time in my life. Buy a Haynes manual, follow it to the letter. Watch more than one YouTube video. Come on here and ask questions. You'll be fine.

Would anybody be interested in a power window, mirror, and lock plug-n-play retrofit kit for your manual doors?

I'm doing the same on my Tacoma and I was thinking I could make kits that use 4Runner door harnesses and components to use in your existing manual doors. A complete kit would include everything (OEM door harnesses, regulators, motors, switches, maybe panels, etc.) and a wiring kit would just include the wiring, relays, and lock computer module to control everything.

So new coolant is needed for timing belt? My rig is getting done tomorrow

Valve covers need to come off? Might as well do new seals right? Mine are currently leaking

I would love to do this, if the cost and headache associated with it wouldn't be too much!!!

Ordered new plug wires (NGK) and NGK plugs. Still have my shiny new Icons and LR UCAs sitting on the floor.:( Still have a $700 order waiting for me on Camelback for the rest of my front suspension overhaul. Soon, hopefully soon.

I looked at it forlornly as I walked past it to my shitty DD and drove to school.

I'm getting a clunk from the rear (drivers?) side when I go over speedbumps, etc. Need to figure that out, it's annoying as hell.
