If you have a 5 speed automatic, the minimum speed that the trans. will shift into 5th (Overdrive) is 31-32mph so it doesn't matter if you shifter is in D or 4, the trans. should be in 4th at 20mph. If it is in 5th at 20 mph, then I would say you are lugging the engine and I would think it would vibrate badly. If it is in 5th at 20mph, indicating a tans. problem then this could explain your rough shifting problem 4-5th at highway speeds. You need to verify which gear it is in at 20mph with shifter in D or 4. This reply is for Tacomans post above.

My vibration is at a slightly higher speed, between 25-30 ish mph I believe. I don't get the vibration while braking. I believe that my truck is going into 5th gear at this 25-30 ish mph and it is like you are driving a 5 speed 4 banger car at a slow speed and a much too high gear.

When put in 4th (locking out 5th) I can drive with no vibrations at this speed. I may have a unique problem with mine, I haven't found anyone with my exact symptoms but they are very similar.

I don't drive in drive around town anymore the vibration drove me nuts, so I have kind of forgot the exact speeds of vibration. On the highway it really aggravates me the way the transmission bangs down in 4th to speed up coming from 5th gear.

It was always kind of embarrassing telling someone that was in the truck that this was a brand new Toyota, and they weren't doing anything about it.:(

I still believe my problem is torque converter related, but what do I know??

This reply is for Tacomamans 08/07 post. I posted a quick reply but I don't see it here.
The minimum speed that 5th gear will engage is 31-32 mph, so it doesn't matter whheter your shifter is in D or 4, at 20mph the trans. should not be in 5th. If in fact it is, there is something very wrong with it and any vibration you are feeling is because you are lugging the engine. Check your tachometer at exactly 20mph and it should read the same rpm's whether the shifter is in D or 4. You could have a very different problem then we are talking about in this thread. Hope this helps you.

I drove the truck today and watched my speed/vibration issues. With the gear selector in 5th, I noticed the 20 mph hesitation/shudder under light acceleration. When I reached 30 mph I did get my vibration/shudderstrip and again at 40 mph.

When I drive in 4th, locking out 5th, I do not get the vibration/shudderstrip. To be honest this may have been the first time I felt the 20 mph vibration in my truck, but the 30-40 mph and 60 mph problems have been here steady. I will try and see if I can reproduce this 20 mph vibration in 4th.

I too am experiencing this shudder vibration at 20-30. Thought it was just the way the truck was, but guess not. Any luck on the PDF for the TSB?

Took delivery of my '09 last week. The new rear transmission mount to correct driveshaft vibration eliminates about 90% of the vibs. The average owner would probably not notice the little bit that is still there. Why did it take Toyota 4 years to come out with a fix for this problem???

The unusual shifting is called downhill assist built into our trucks. Now, the vibration on a non-lifted truck is the crappy designed carrier bearing. It bounces all around with a very weak support structure. Now when you lift and get vibrations it gets a little more complicated. Like pinion angles and front diff stressors... Theres a video floating around here from a camera mounted under a tacoma during take-off. Watch the carrier bearing jump all around while under load. This is why many people are fixing their vibration with a 1 piece shaft eliminating the CB all together..

I saw the first three words in the title (20 MPH vibration) and I immediately thought this was an ad for a certain type of female pleasure device... Then I read the rest of the title.

P9040285_51e4894ad07e89dae09debe6e265927807b8cb08.jpgthanks for the pdf. I have been researching this since i bought my 08 Prerunner DC V6 SR5 auto tranny. I noticed the vibration a few days after purchasing the truck and hoped it would go away but it never did. It seems to have gotten a little worst after installing the 3" lift on the truck. I guess I can now call the dealer and see what can be done. And im assuming I should take the lift off before I go being that I installed it myself, then they can't try and BS me about mods being the problem. thanks!!! Will keep updated

I called the local dealership and told them about the vibration and the TSB. They looked it up and said no problem bring it in ad we'll fix it. I told them I had a 3" lift installed, they still said no problem, but they couldn't guarantee the results being that it was lifted. But all in all im getting the new rear engine mount replaced next week. I will let you guys know if this helps. I have also been reading about the leaf spring TSB, I have the 3 leaf pack on my 08 and have no bottoming out issues even when towing a 20' boat. I think they may be redisgned. They have the 2 normal leafs and then a big one.

takin mine in tomorrow for the following:

    -Vibration at 15-30
-Thunk when coming to a stop
-jerking from the truck when shifting
-some gear whine when at 80mph

So far I have 3000 miles...not very happy. I'm hoping its all related to the 2 piece drive shaft and if they replace it maybe it will go away. Also might push for them to replace the rear axle/pumpkin assembly do to excessive wear and tear from the other problems mentioned above.

I'll keep everyone posted. I really love the truck and don't want to get rid of it but this is getting real annoying.

If anyone else figures out what it is please post.

Toyota installed the fix for the 20mph vibration on slowing. Still has a slight vibration. Has anyone else observed this or should I go back and have them check it out?

I've got the same issue, vibration when braking from 30-40MPH. Dealer shaved front rotors which made my front brake mushy, now they will replace the rear brake drums. I've heard the TSB for vibration doesn't work....

Hey I have the same issue with my 03 V6 Auto. I know it's a 1st gen but I get a distinct vibration/rumble when passing the 21mph mark and again at around 31mph.

If I play with the gas and keep it around those marks, the vibration will continue. As soon as I get out of that range, the vibaration is gone.

when I say vibration, it's a pretty high frequency vibration and very soft. I can feel it thru the floor as well as the steering wheel.

Is this what you guys are experiencnig as well?

Yes, it seems the Tacomas with a 2 piece drive shaft are the ones with this problem. Toyota installed a modified rear transmission mount in an attempt to correct the vibration starting with the '09's. I had an '08 and now an '09 and both trucks have (had) the same problem. One of the owners in this Forum had a 1 piece drive shaft made for his truck and said that corrected the vibration.
I don't like it but Iguess I've learned to live with it.
